Graha = Seizer.. A new perspective

Dear All:

It's commonly understood that the 9 astrological bodies are known as

" Graha " because they " seize " or " hold " us in their grasp. I would like

to challenge this notion, because it is not in alignment with a

correct understanding of how creation operates.

" Man is the architect of his own destiny "

A human being creates karma of his or her own freewill (called

kriyamana or agama karma). The grahas are described in the Bhagavat

Purana and elsewhere as they who WITNESS our every thought and action.

(Since the moon IS our mind, how can anything escape her witness,

etc?). Thus the grahas HOLD or SIEZE our karma until it is time for

that karma to bear fruit, at which time they release it upon us.

Thinking that the Graha's seize or hold a human being directly leads

to a wrong world view which is fatalistic and not in line with the

basis of Jyotish philosophy. This is a better way to understand what

the graha do, and what they " hold " .

In fact no one besides yourself has any jurisdiction to seize you in

the ultimate picture. Even God himself abides by this principle, which

is the entire reason why a material creation manifests at all - to

give living entities who desire it an opportunity to enact a lifestyle

that is separate from God. Not even Svayam Bhagavan, God Himself

seizes or holds any living being, what to speak of his servants, the 9

Grahas.
