Guest guest
Dear Balaji, Interesting that this should come up now as only last Friday my MD prescribed vitamin D (Ostelin) as a recent blood test (a regular procedure for diabetics) revealed a lack of this important vitamin. He did comment that it would be much cheaper if I could just get out in the Sun a bit more. However, as he quickly conceded, that's a little complicated (for me) due to the increased sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity) caused by beta blocker medication. Anyway, not to clog the board with a long medical history, sufficient to say that it's interesting you should bring this up now :-) PS: Another interesting point here is that the chemist advised me it was cheaper to " buy over the counter " than to have the prescription filled...needless to say I told him to tear the prescription up. What a strange world we live in...you pay more if the doctor prescribes it? I have of late started reading a lot of health articles, and I found two articles today that were interesting from a Jyotish angle: 1. Vitamin D may protect against heart attack -study WASHINGTON, June 9 (Reuters) - Men with low levels of vitamin D have an elevated risk for a heart attack, researchers said on Monday in the latest study to identify important possible health benefits from the " sunshine vitamin. " http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN09472209 2. Smoking Tied to Memory Loss in Middle Age MONDAY, June 9 (HealthDay News) -- Middle-aged smokers are more prone to memory problems than their non-smoking peers, a new French study suggests. http://health.usnews.com/articles/health/healthday/2008/06/09/smoking-tied-to-me\ mory-loss-in-middle-age.html In the first case, Surya is karaka for both bones and the heart--and in the second case, Chandra is the karaka for both lungs and memory. Guest guest
Dear Friends/ Balaji A 4km walk a day, starting at 5 to 7 in morning is a cure to all kinds of diseases you can name. People who walk 4 kms or more a day have 80% less chances of catching diseases. (any kind) For majority of people there is NO better exercise than plain simple brisk walking. Now which planet is associated with walking that it makes life SO much better.!! I feel a drastic reduction in saturine tendencies after a good walk.!! Guest guest
Dear Rajeev, > I feel a drastic reduction in saturine tendencies after a good walk.!! This is no coincidence! =) What is a walk if not *circulation*? What is Saturn if not vatta (circulation)? By walking you placate the needs of Saturn. Guest guest
*** Wendy ji, ///He did comment that it would be much cheaper if I could just get out in the Sun a bit more./// A friend of mine recently broke an arm and since recovery needed calcium--which in turn is absorbed in the presence of Vitamin D--he too was told to do this. Apparently, according tos doctor, 15 minutes of exposture to the Sun is all one needs for daily Vitamin D. Of course, this is not always possible for all of us! :-) Even with my dusky skin, I'm not able to take the harsh rays of the Sun for more than five minutes in Bangalore! My first nephew was born in 2002 and had jaundice at birth. No medicines were prescribed--we were told to expose him to the Sun in the morning and the evening. ///What a strange world we live in...you pay more if the doctor prescribes it?/// You can say that again! :-) *** Rajeev ji, ///Now which planet is associated with walking that it makes life SO much better.!!/// Well, this involves the body--so, Lagna is important. Plus, houses 9th to the 12th play a role--between them, these four houses they govern the legs and the feet. ///I feel a drastic reduction in saturine tendencies after a good walk.!!/// Well, Sani does rule legs in general! :-) *** Vic ji, ///I can see Surya as the karaka for heart, but why do you mention bones on this list? I thought Saturn indicated bones./// According to http://www.jyotishvidya.com/prikriti.htm the Sapta Dhatu are ruled as below: 1. Surya Bones 2. Chandra Blood 3. Mangala Marrow 4. Budha Skin 5. Guru Fat 6. Sukra Semen 7. Sani Muscles ///A box of chocolates, a dozen roses, and diamond earrings. Sound romantic? OF COURSE it does! They all invoke Srimati Venus!/// Good one! :-) ~~~~~~~~~ Balaji Narasimhan Author & Editor http://www.balaji.ind.in/ ~~~~~~~~~

From an astrological perspective, Surya is a malefic, but the least malefic of all the malefics. Similarly, the moon is least benefic of the benefics. In a sense I think it's better to say that the disposition of the luminaries fluctuates. The moon fluctuates most widely - being very benefic when full, and barely benefic at all when dark. But the sun also fluctuates. Is there any sastric support to a notion which would state that people born towards noon will have more malefic effect from the sun, while those born in evening and twilight more benefic? I know it's a principle of Kala-bala that Malefics, including the sun, get a little improvement towards a person born at night. My thinking is this... the sun is wonderful and benefic, as long as you are not stuck, unexposed in his direct sunlight at midday without sunblock or a bottle of water. In any case - for medicinal use, mid-day is not good, and morning sun is far better than evening sun. That's a principle I've heard consistently from Ayurvedic Kavis. > ///I can see Surya as the karaka for heart, but why do you mention > bones on this list? Across the world black is the color of mourning, and the color of those who are looked down upon (the " bad guys " ). Ripped, black clothing, thinness and bad posture is the trademark of modern " emo " kids, who are obsessed with grief, being outcastes, etc. Thanks, Vic
