Guest guest
dear Leena, u can find ur query explained by going thro the article given below. good luck, k.gopu PRADOSHAM Lord Shiva blessed the whole world and community by swallowing the poison. The Hindu mythology explains that on the occasion of churning Amritha Nectar the divinly Prasad of sacred liquid which gives an everlasting life to those who drink it. The vast milky ocean when the divines and giants churned for Amritha, the snake Vasuki was used as rope duly circled on Manthara giri (A big mount used as churner). The task was big and great. The snake felt the tediousness and discharged the venam (poison) which ofcourse highly poisonous to destroy the whole world. The Divines prayed for the help of Lord Shiva, who blessed and swallowed the poison. Thus the great escape was rendered upon the world which was saved from great danger. This is the event honoured and worshiped in respect of adoring the Lord Shiva. Every month this pooja will come. Those who worship and do this pooja will be getting the blessings of Shiva and get relieved of troubles. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PRADHOSHAM Pradhosham’ literally refers to a particular period of time of worship that has the power to free us from our sins and pave the pathway to attaining moksha. In Shukla Paksha (15 moon days from New moon to Full moon) and Krishna Paksha (15 moon days from Full moon to New moon) the evening of Trayodasi (thirteenth moon day) between 5.30pm to 6.30 pm (WA time) is called Pradhosham. There are five types of Pradhosham: 1. Nitya Pradhosham - The evening time on all days, between 3 ghatis (72 minutes) just before sunset and the time when the stars rise or become visible in the sky. 2. Paksha Pradhosham - Sandhya (evening) time of Shukla Paksha Chaturthi (4th Lunar day after New Moon) of every month. 3. Maasa Pradhosham - Sandhya Krishna Paksha Trayodashi (13th Lunar day after Full Moon) of every month. 4. Maha Pradhosham - Sandhya time of Krishna Paksha Trayodashi which falls on a Saturday. 5. Pralaya Pradhosham - The time when the entire universe gets annihilated and merged with Lord Shiva. Pradosha Vrata is observed on every 13th Lunar day after full and new Moon, with the hope of being free from, miseries or for gaining material prosperity. When Pradhosham coincides on a Saturday, it is known as ‘SANI PRADHOSHAM’. Pradhosham is considered as the most auspicious time when Lord Shiva gives darshan of his Anandha Tandava (Dance of Joy). Given that the preserver of the Universe - Maha Vishnu himself is said to have experienced the joy of Lord Shiva’s dance during Pradhosha kaala, it is a shastra rule (vithi) that one should not worship any avatars of Maha Vishnu, except that of Sri Rama and Sri Narasimha, during this time. This is because both Sri Rama and Sri Narasimha, in essence, share some of the common celestial elements of Lord Shiva. This is cited in the following mantra: “Na Pradhosha Hareem Pasyeth nrusamham Raghavam Vinaa†. PRADOSHA PURANA – AS NARATED IN THE BRAHMOTHKANDAM PURANA AND THE KAASI KANDA PURANA Once the gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) were churning the milky ocean with the help of Vasuki, the serpent king who was hoping to extract amritam (nectar) from the Kseerabthi (milk ocean). Vasuki, who was employed as a rope for churning the milky ocean, endured severe abrasions and strangulation. Thereupon, he spewed halahalam, a potent dark poison capable of destroying the worlds. Threatened by the scorching venom, the celestials fled in great horror. Brahma took to His heels. Vishnu’s bluish body darkened further. Indra could not be seen. Agni, the fire god, could not bear the raging heat. Yama ran amuck in all directions. Varuna became unconscious, Kubera fled. Hosts of siddhas, caranas, gandharvas, yaksas and maharsis went to Kailasa and sought the Lord’s feet as refuge. Lord Shiva was moved with pity at their plight and was overwhelmed with compassion by their prayers. Soon He bade Sundara for a prompt intervention, who then rushed to the ocean, collected the all-pervasive poison and returned to Kailasa. Seeing it, the Lord became exceedingly happy and gave the title ‘Halahala’ to Sundara, who thenceforth came to be known as Halahala Sundara. Thereupon, the Lord accepted the Halahala pellet from his hand and, with the loving permission of Universal Mother, swallowed it. By goddess Uma Parvathi’s command, the pellet froze in the Lord’s throat, painting it blue and becoming an embellishment – thus, giving Him the name Neelakantha. [it is also a common practice for womanhood to worship Goddess Parvathi for long life of Husbands as She is endowed with ‘Maangalya Baagyam’ and could turn the poison into nectar]. The Hindu Association of Western Australia Inc July 2006 Page 5 Z Subsequently, the Devas approached Kailasam in order to show their gratitude to Lord Shiva who had saved the world from a grave danger. The timing of their arrival was significant in that it was Pradosham and particularly on the day of Thrayodhasi Thiti. It was also at this time that Lord Shiva who had half-swallowed the poison, was performing the Anandha Tandava. However, He was emitting poisonous air when exhaling during the Tandavam. The Devas who were deeply embraced in Lord Shiva’s Ananda Tandava inhaled the poisonous air. At the same time, there was fear that the poisonous breath from Lord Shiva could kill all living souls. It was at this stage that Nandhi stood in front of Lord Shiva and inhaled the poisonous air. Pleased by the most revered act of Lord Nandhi, Lord Shiva placed the following order: “Lord Nandhi, who had inhaled My poisonous breath in view of saving the world, must be worshiped first before Me, during Pradhosha Kaala.†HOW TO PERFORM SOMASUTHRA PRADAKSHINAM DURING PRADOSHAM? During Prashosham time the Somasuthra pradakshinam is the suggested way of circumambulating the Lord. A point to note here is that the gomukhi (Abisheka outlet) is never crossed. The Gomukhi is the place where the water (Abisheka Theerta) would be flowing northwards out. By doing pradakshinam in this way one does not step over this holy water. As indicated in the diagram below: Begin the pradakshinam by saluting the Rishabha Devar (Holy Bull or Nandi) and go anti-clockwise to salute Chandeswarar (not crossing the Gomukhi). Now return in the clockwise manner salute Rishabham and continue clockwise till the Gomukhi (not to cross it again). Then return in anti-clockwise direction salute the Rishabham again and proceed towards chandeswarar. From there return back clockwise salute Rishabham and reach the Gomukhi. Return back anticlockwise from there without worshiping Rishabham and continue to Chandeswarar and return back to Rishabham and worship the Shiva Lingam (at the altar) by viewing from afar through the space between the two horns of the Holy Bull (without touching the Nandhi). If you carefully observe the curve traced by doing this pradakshinam it is very similar to the periphery of the crescent. Hence, this way of circumambulating is called Somasuthra Pradakshinam. The Somasuthra Pradakshinam BENEFITS FROM PARTICIPATING IN PRADHOSHA POOJA Pradhosha time is especially meant for praying to Lord Shiva and the Rishabha Devar (Nandhi). One should not pray to Lord shiva alone during Pradhosham time but must include Rishabha Devar (the Nandhi) in the worship. Praying during Maha Pradhosha time (that which falls on Trayodashi Tithi in the evening of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha) is significant in that it is believed to free us from our sins and give us moksha. Whoever prays to Lord Shiva during Pradhosha time, it is believed that Lord Shiva will fulfill their wishes and will give them mukthi. It is said that on Maha Pradhosha day all Gods and goddesses assemble at Mount Kailesh to worship Lord Shiva. This bestows all kinds of wealth and comforts. The Hindu Association of Western Australia Inc July 2006 Page 6 HOW TO PARTICIPATE? It is only during Pradhosham that special abishekam is performed simultaneously to both the Shiva and Rishabha Devar (Nandhi) deities. Anointing (Abhishekam) these deities with the following is considered fruitful: Milk gives long life Ghee gives Moksha state/ Salvation Curd gives good children Honey gives melodious voice Rice powder frees from debts Sugarcane juice gives good health & happiness Panjamrutham gives wealth & success Lemon removes fear of death Sugar removes enmity Tender coconut gives enjoyment Rice gives majestic life & employment opportunities Sandal gives Lakshmi's grace & wealth ______________________________\ ____ It's here!
