When I go to buy how shall I know it is of goods and genuine quality and right price. I need to know for Pukhraj and Emerald. Pls guide me on this. What are Jyotish Quality Gems? " Inward luster, transparency, illumination with rays, sparkle, free from impurities and good formation of the shape are the characteristics of good gems " -( Agni Purana, 246.13-14). " If anyone wears a gem of many flaws out of ignorance, then grief, anxiety, sickness, death, loss of wealth and other evils will torment him " -( Garuda Purana, 70.19). They are the finest quality of gemstones, natural and more... The beauty and quality appreciation of any gemstone lies in its Color, Clarity, and Cut. The perfection in each of there gives a combined fine gem specimen. * Color has perhaps the most apparent bearing on the look and attractiveness of a gemstone. Almost all gemstones known to man come in a wide range of colors, but only particular shades in each gemstone are highly desirable and give them the quality distinction via color. * Clarity is one aspect that is most commonly apparent to the naked eye, although the finer materials require magnification level clarities to be termed as a fine specimen. Finer gems are free from any sort of inclusions and black spots that hinder the beauty of the gem. Having said that, certain types and forms of minor inclusions sometimes are acceptable as they are indicative of the gem being natural as opposed to one being enhanced. * Cut or the make of a gemstone gives it shape, size and sparkle. The most prized ones are " paribha " , a sea beach blue, bluish green variety. When in high quality, the prices are sky high. They come from a state paribha in Brazil, and in past 2 years new deposits in small quantities are being mined in Madagascar. In today's commercial market, almost all of the gem material tourmalines are commonly heated and irradiated (generally gamma ray treatment for the sharp red color ones). It is an accepted practice within the gem community, however, for jyotish purposes it leaves the gem " powerless " . Tourmalines were until a couple of years ago very popular for everyone to wear in Japan, because they were believed to cure depression and bring good luck. To tell you a very interesting personal experience, I was trying to fix vaastu of my father's office in New York. So, I was walking around in the office with compass, and as soon as I would go near Tourmalines (which were on the wall displayed in quantities of about 15-20 kgs total, the compass would go crazy showing wrong directions...!!!! Try using them when you want to strengthen Mercury with a bit of support from Sun. Sri Vincent- if you go in the archives, I had written about some excellent qualities of Green Tourmaline. Maybe, you would find them useful. Besides being magnetic, this gemstone is Piezoelectric. It is an amazing and a gentle stabilizer for nervous system. It also protects the motor ways of the nerves and problems associated from the same. There is a Chrome variety of Tourmaline, which is very quick and powerful in giving results. A good gemology lab will tell you if it is chrome or not. In this business, knowing the right person to buy from is more important than knowing the right quality of stone to buy. Its a business of trust and reputation. I am sure you make a good purchase. Remember as I wrote earlier, a " saattvic " gem starts working right away, and it calls you, so hopefully you choose a gem that was your " calling " , these things lack logic but I strongly believe in them. Why do we wear a gem? by wearing, we are sort of inviting the devi/devata associated with the gem to kindly come and grace the gem with their presence, this is also why we want the gem as their abode to be fine and jyotish quality. It is then that the true benefits and fruits of the gem starting flowing to us. Do try and find a good local purohit or pundit to do shuddhi on the gem and elect a good muhurata to wear it, with utmost faith and sincerity in the deity.
