Namaste,

In the 6th and 8th Bhava Pala Adhyaya of the various Vedic-Astrological

classics I could see various names of ailments based on Siddha or Aayur Veda /

Indian system of medicine ; some of the names in the texts are difficult to

understand with reference to Allopathic ailment names .One such ailment name is

Cancer, its equivalent Aayur Vedic name I wanted to ascertain from our list

Pundits but did not get any answer. In the absence of an answer, I conclude that

though Sanskrit is said to be dated back 1700 BCE, either the Modern invented

ailments after CE does not find place in Sanskrit terminologies or may be

‘Dhanwantri’ did not fore see such a disease / ailment or due to lack of

Sanskrit knowledge among the folk I was not able to get an answer.

Not my forte, what you ask but try a few of these for searching more:

Gulma = tumour

Vrana/Brana/Brona = skin lesions like melanoma but not just melanoma

I am positive that I knew a few more terms for malignant lesions in

hindi/sanskrit some thirty years ago when I was closer to these, so

please do research. These were described in ancient texts ...

Namaste,

Thank you very much for good suggestions. Now I got a point, that in my copy

of a book Tamil version of ‘Jathakathvam’ under rOka bhava it is said that Moon

in the kataka, vrichika, kumbha navamsa together with Saturn may give rise to

‘kunma’ rOka [let me find out 'kunma' in Tamil = 'gulma' in Sanskrit?].

I think gulma means a collection or cluster. Some malignant tumours

look like clusters of tissue growth, similar to cauliflower in

appearance.

But I could be way off base as neither cancer nor sanskrit is where I

am at home :-)

Dear Members:

Gulma rhoga is actually a chronic enlargement of spleen or any other

glandular organ in the abdominal activity.

The right sanskrit term for Cancer is " Adhimaamsa "

or " adhimaamsaka " . But the most common medical term for Cancer

disease was " Vyaala Rhoga " meaning " mischievious or vicious " disease.

Vrana is the general term for any abscess including ulcer, tumor,

etc.

The adhimaamsa is applied for opthalmic cancer. Vyaalasarma rhoga

for melanomas and other skin lesions. Vyaala ruthira rhoga for blood

cancer; Vrana for ulcers and for cancerous lesions oozing out fluids.

Blessed be.

Pandit R.DAKSHINAMOORTHI.

No gandamaalaa is a specific type of tumour of thyroid, also known as

goitre. Perhaps an ayurvedic physician who may be on the forum would

be able to help since they are the only ones who probably use these

terms on a daily basis.
