The division into months by position of the Sun

are as under -

Sun in Sign /Name of Indian months/English months.

Aries- Vaisakha - April-May

Taurus - Jyeshta - May-June

Gemini - Aslesha - June-July

Cancer - Shravan - July-August

Leo - Bhadra - August-Sept

Virgo- Ashwin - Sept-October

Libra - Kartika - Oct-November

Scorpio- Agrahayana -Nov-Dec

Sagittarius - Pausa - Dec-Jan

Capricorn - Magha- Jan-Feb

Aquarius- Phalguna- Feb-March

Pisces - Chaitra- March-April

Why are names of 2 English months given

together and not one single English month ?

Answer- Because Sun enters a sign normally on

the mid (15th or 16th) of every month and remains

in that sign till the mid of next month, hence we have

to write two months names for English months,

whereas for Hindu months., it is not like that.

The names of the Indian months originated from the

names of Nakshatra where Purnima (Full Moon)

takes place.

Due to elliptical orbit, Purnima does not take

place in the same position or at the same Nakshatra

every year. For instance,Chandra in Purnima in the

month of Agrahayana, maybe in Ardra or in Mrgasira,

so the month of Agrahayana, has another name,

Margashirsha.

regards,

Bhaskar.
