Guest guest
Sir, I am not sure if the Mayanese civilisation knew about the precesion of equinoxes at their time.or did they ? But much before them , during the Rig vedic times, our people were knowing about,The Ayana chalan (Retrogression of the vernal Equinox). Many shlokas of the rigvedas confirm this. I am not sure exactly what you are looking for to comment further. This is a very intricate study and calls for the best astronomical brains who know trignometry. regards, Bhaskar. , " indiadirector " <raj wrote: > > Dear group members, > Have you had any experience in looking at the Mayan Calendar, which > some say ends on 21st Dec 2012? Guest guest
I have also heard from experts, that in coming centuries, one will have to add the ayanamsha to their statistical data arrived at, instead of deducting, as we do now. Though I confess I did not much understand what they were talking about, since I do not have knowledge of astronomy, as much is required, to be called even basic. Guest guest
I am starting with a brief note on the Mayan Calendar and will add the connection to the Vedic Astrology as we go along. Actually, there are several calendars together called Mayan Calendar system. We are refering to the two most important calendars. The first calendar is of 260 days called the Tzolkin and the second one of 360 days called the Haab Calendar. Tzolkin is a calendar for auspicious days (like our own Muhurta) while the Haab calendar was primarily used for arriving at the seasons for agrarian use. There is a correlation between the Tzolkin and Haab calendar. Tzolkin is the interesting of the two because of two reasons: a) The Tzolkin comes to an end on 21st Dec 2012; b) The 'purpose' of Tzolkin was to lead every single day in line with the 'purpose' of the day which was said to be influenced by a Patron saint for that day. There was a tradition for a priest to predict the character and nature of a child based on the date of birth in the Tzolkin, very similar to our Jataka Readings. What intrigues me is the date of 21st Dec 2012 deliberately chosen to end the calendar. There are several astronimcal coincidences on this date. I will write about this tomorrow. regards, raj rao , " indiadirector " <raj wrote: > > Dear group members, > Have you had any experience in looking at the Mayan Calendar, which > some say ends on 21st Dec 2012? Guest guest
Dear Raj ji, But this 21st december 2012 is from Gregorian system ie. Guest guest
Dear Tarunji, They must be having some sets of years they used in their times, like we have yugas, probably, and if I am not mistaken they had sets of 5000 odd years each set, therefore though these may be translated in todays terminology as 2012 AD, to end, But, they must have commenced about 3000 years before, and to understand by People of todays times, since we use this Calendar,it may be expressed as such. But I may be absolutely wrong in above. regards, Bhaskar. , " Tarun " <tarun.virgo wrote: > > Dear Raj ji, > > But this 21st december 2012 is from Gregorian system ie. From what I read, the Mayans apparently based their calendar system on the cycles of Venus. Although accurate, their calendar was complicated and to be adjusted periodically to add a month to coincide with the cycle of the Earth around the Sun. Knowing the signification of Venus in vedic literature (teacher of the demons), I'm a bit apprehensive about using the Mayan system in accounting for one's time. As we all know, their culture was infamous for having human sacrifices (as shown in the movie, Apocalypto). And for whatever reasons, their civilization collapsed out even before the arrival of the Spaniards in the Americas. Some historians believe that the collapse was due to lack of food to sustain the growing population. However, I still suspect that the collapse was due to their culture violence. As in the law of karma, their culture reaped what it sowed.

Guest guest
Dear Bhaskar ji, yes they must have setup or equate both of the calenders to read in general prospects. lets see what Raj Rao ji, says in his further explanation of the same topic. Guest guest
Let me answer a few questions raised by the members, before it gets buried: Sunil asked: 1) Pls share what u meant by the Ayanamsha issue in regards to the Mayan Calendar - 21/22 Dec 2012 is the date of the Winter Solstice. If you go by the Sayan Zodiac, it will be the date of Makar Sankranti (transit of sun into Capricorn) around 16:48 hours. At this time, Sun is farthest away from the Equator, with a declination of -23:26:15. However, if you go by the Nirayan Zodiac (taking into account the Lahiri Ayanamsha), Sun will be in Sagittarius with a degree of 245:57:46. Shouldn't Uttarayana start on the date of the Winter Solstice and the Makar Sankranti? 2) Pls also share ur research on the Mayan Calender would be me most interesting am sure - I would rather have an open dialogue because I cannot claim to be a scholar in this subject. Just a curious researcher. In order to understand my point better, we all need to be on the same page. Bhaskar asked: 1) I am not sure if the Mayanese civilisation knew about the precession of equinoxes at their time.or did they ? - They apparently did know about the Precession. I will address this a bit later. 2) I have also heard from experts, that in coming centuries, one will have to add the ayanamsha to their statistical data arrived at, instead of deducting, as we do now. - This is an excellent point brought up by Bhaskar. More importantly, can the Ayanamsha value be zero (so that the Sayan and Nirayan zodiac can coincide)? That will be the golden age of Astrology! I will explore this later. Tarun asked: 1) But this 21st december 2012 is from Gregorian system ie. English system of dates. - There is a system developed to bridge the Mayan Calendar and the Gregorian System - it is called Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correleation (or just GMT). According to GMT, the starting point of the Tzolkin calendar was 11/12th August 3114 BC. Bhaskar Asked: a) They must be having some sets of years they used in their times, like we have yugas.... - Yes indeed. They called a day a Kin. 20 Kins made a Uinal. 18 Uinals make 1 Tun. 20 Tuns make a Katun. 20 Katuns make a Baktun. 1 Tun is is approximately 1 Solar Year. 1 Katun is approximately 20 Solar Years. and 1 Baktun is about 395 Solar Years. 13 Baktuns adds up to a 'Great Cycle' of 5125 Years. (Just remember this number, as we will come back to this - this number is 72x72 - the rate of 1 deg of precession) So, what is so great about the date 21st Dec 2012, after all Winter Solstice happens every year. In the year 2012, the Winter Solstice coincides with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator and the Ecliptic! Galactic Equator is nothing but the plane of our milkyway, and Ecliptic is the band within which all our planets transit. Have to run, will write soon. regards, raj , " indiadirector " <raj wrote: > > I am starting with a brief note on the Mayan Calendar and will add the > connection to the Vedic Astrology as we go along. Guest guest
Dear Shri Rao ji, Very nice explanation. and yes it would be a golden period when Tropical and Indian system uses same ayanamsa. i.e. 0.oo Do you have any information that why this calender was eliminated to use in general system of calender. I copy-paste the reply I received from my 'guru' in response to this (I'd sent your mail across because that guy loves this ayanamsha, etc.): " Well, it does coincide once in roughly 25,800 years and for that one year, both the sayana and nirayana chakras are the same. What's centrally different in both schools is the way the zodiac is viewed - it's unchanging with us guys whereas the western, Sun-centric school flips it back to 0 Aries each year around mid-March when the vernal equinox occurs. There can never be a perpetual sameness unless precession itself stops " PJ
