Placenta is " born " about 30 mins after the Baby is born. Typically,

doctors cut the umbilical cord and separate the baby from the mother

within a minute of birth. As soon as the baby is born, it requires to

breathe - irrespective of whether the placenta and the umbilical cords

are still attached or not. Because, breathing is the function of the

environment and not of the placenta. As long as the baby is within the

cocooon it does not require to breathe fresh air. As soon as it is out

, it needs to learn to breathe - which comes naturally or sometimes it

needs to be induced.

Hope this helps.
