Lahiri=Grahlaghava=Surya Sidhanta!

2. It is common knowledge by now that even the Puranas talk of Makar

Sankranti coinciding with the shortest day of the year i.e.

Uttarayana/Winter Solstice! (Pl. see Rashi5 and BVB6 etc. papers in

files section)

3. The Vedas and the Vedanga Jyotisha have talked of Uttarayana-cum-

the start of Tapah-cum-Magha month simultaneously. I have not seen

anybody celebrating any festival on that day now-a-days, thanks to

Lahiri " Vedic Jyotishis " . It appears these " Vedic Jyotishis " are

bent on making us celebrate all our festivals only as and when it

pleases them i.e. only as and when it suited " almighty " Lahiri's

fancies and whims, without any rhyme or reason, at least without any

astronomical or scriptural basis!

Dear A K Kaul

 

I m not certain whether I am right in what i am mentioning but what I hv read in some mythological books Makar sankarati indicates the bigening of day in Brahma Lok. It is also the begining of Uttrayan. It is said that six months of Uttrayan indicates day time for Brahma ji & Daksyaan indicates night time for Brahmaji. Thus one calender year of dharti lok signifies one day of Brahma Lok.

 

The begining of day in Brahma Lok, one says Good Morning Brahma Devji. We are thus having the darshan of Lord Brahma & Brahmaji, the creator of this universe under the instructions of Lord Vishnu, gives us darshan. When we have darshan of the Lord in the morning hours, we have this solaice that our day will be very good. Thus Makar Sankrati signifies the begining of auspiciousnous in our lives.

Shri Haresh Nathaniji,

Namaskar!

All the " qualifications " that you have quoted can be attributed only

to a Makar Sankranti that is just a synonym of Uttarayana i.e. the

Winter Solstice.

As such, we are celebrating it on a wrong day, since Winter Solstice

means the shortest day of the year and nothing else. And that was on

December 21, 2008 and not on January 14, 2009.

 

Regarding the day of Brhamaji etc. starting with Makar Sankranti, pl.

quote the exact references.
