Dear Friends,As regard signification of planets , There seems to be some misunderstanding ,which is further compounded and differentiating the signification based on BPHSand Janini Updesh Sutra.Updesh means instructions or clarifications. It is my humble opinion Updesh Sutra should be studied with BPHS including other Hora shastra (s)'Sutras are written to give the knowlegde in capsule form for easy rememberance.Planetary kakakatwa are of several categories:Naisargika karkatwa - this is used for general accessment of nativity and every day prediction purposed. All jatak classicals enumarates them in detail. Some savantshave published books exclusively dealing in natural significations of planets , housesand nakshatras. This is a vast topic and ever increasing as demands and requirements of human societiy is expanding.Mr. Shiv Kumar Chadha has publised a book "Significators in Astrology" based on classicals. There are some special significations of planets which are dealt exclusively in a seperate chapter 32 ' Planetary Karkatwa".This chapter does not deal in 'naisargika -naturalsignification of planets'.These special significations are for different use and purpose, as per details indicated below in brief:1. CHAR_KARKA-Eight char karka (Sun to Rahu) is used for jiva's and seven char karka Are used for mundane matters (Sun TO Saturn excluding RAHU). Ketu does not play any part in this scheme. We need assitance from other relations to sustain in this life BASED ON OUR PAST KARMA.Planet based on char karka principle , thus acts sustainer in life.AK represents self- Lagna and 8H, Amatya karka -10H, BK -3H,9H(as guru) and 11H (as elder siblings). MK-4H, Pitra karka - 9H, Putra karka - 5H , GK-our Kula and also enemy -6Hand finaly DK - spouse -7H and 2H.In 7 CHAR karka scheme PUtra karka is merged with Matru karka.2.STHIR KARKA- If some planets , representing relatives which try to give sustinance in our life , this sustinance will reduce , dundile or disappear all to geather in once life. Sthir karka also represent same relatives and are indicator of reduced or disappearance of their support level. I am giving below the list of sthir karka based on Sutra and BPHS chapter 32: a, Sun or Venus (which ever is stronger0-Father ( who has donated sperm for the birth) b, Moon or Mars (which ever is stronger)- Mother who has given birth to native. c. MARS-yonger brothers, brother inlaws, sister in laws , sex partener in case of female(other than leagal wedded husband) d,Mercury-Marernal uncles, aunts, all maternal relatives e. Jupiter-Paternal grand parents, husband, children f . Wife, Sex partner in case of male, mother in law and maternal grand fatherg. Elder brothers , Progeny (according to BPHS) 3 Char karka replacement - When ever two or more planets are on same zodiac degrees in their respective signs , this resuts in disappearance of one or two or more chara karkaand their place is taken over by Sthir karka(s).As purpose of sthir and char karka(s) is diamaterically opposite , as such in the nativities where char karka replacementoccur , there is always some tremoil in their life at some point of time. As some savants are not able to appereciate the hint given in BPHS , they try to opposethis principleThree kinds of other karkas are dicussed in this chapter 32 of BPHS.That will explained in next mail.Regards,G. K. Goel

Dear Arkayda,I think the second line says that the stronger between Chandra and Mangal is the matrukaraka. The view of Venus or Sun being Pitrukaraka when strong is also expressed by Jaimini if memory serves me right.Different authorities have different views on this. Some hold that stronger between Moon os matrikaraka for those born in night but Venus is karaka for maternal aunt and vice-a-versa for day time birth and then they give Pitrukarakatwa to Sun and Uncle karakatwa to Shani depending on day or night birth. However the commonly accepted Karakatwa stays with Sun as Pitru karaka and Moon as Matru Karaka. In Nadis Venus is said to represent husband and Mars the wife of the jataka as aalso the brotheres and sisters. So there are different views on the sthira Karakas.Personally I hink the reason for Venus getting

related to males is its rulership over sperm and Mars being commectged to females is its ruling over the ova. But then I amy be totally wrong.Sitaram Jha's interpretation is in line with what Jaimini proposes.Regards,Chandrashekhar.--- On Wed, 2/9/09, arkaydash <arkaydash (AT) (DOT) co.in> wrote:arkaydash <arkaydash (AT) (DOT) co.in>[Astro-Health-Remedies] BPHS: what does the sage exactly say? Namaste Chandrashekhar- jee, Goel-jee:

I draw your attention to a block of verses in BPHS (Sitaram Jha translation) on sthira kaaraka.

KAARAKADHYAYA (33)

Adhuna prabakshyami sthiraakhyaan kaarakagrahaan

Sa pritukarako gneyo yo bali rabi-shukroyoh //18//

Chandraarayorbalee kheTo matrukaaraka uchyate

Bhoumato bhaginee shyaaLah kaniyaan jananeetyaapi //19//

Budhaanmatrujateeya a matuLaaDyaascha bandhabah

Guroh pitamahah shukraat patih putrah shanescharaat //20//

Bipraantebaasinah patni pitorou shwashurou tathaa

Maataamahaadayaschi ntya ete cha sthirakaarakah //21//

The slokas are uncomplicated but the content is problematic.

First

Karaka for father: Sun or Venus, whichever is stronger

For mother: Moon or Venus, whichever is stronger

1:Venus as a candidate for father karaka I had not heard of.

2:What if Venus in a horoscope is stronger than Sun thus becoming pitru karaka and is also stronger than Moon, thus becoming matru kaaraka? A Venus when stronger than both Sun and Moon is father kaaraka as well as mother kaaraka!

Second

From Mars: sister, wife's brother, younger brother, and ALSO mother (jananee + iti + api)

From Merc: Nothing problematic

From Jupiter grand father: ditto

From Venus: husband = (?)

From Saturn: son = (??)

Sitaram Jha interprets 'antebaasee' as Ketu.

So he derives from Ketu: wife, mother, father, mother-in-law, fater-in-law, mother's father, mother's mother.

My reading of 21st Shloka is this. The planets (bipra) that figure at the end denote wife's 'parents and grandparents' (patni pitarou), father-in-law (wife's father), grandmother, ETC.

While Shloka 21 lends itself to varying interpretation, Shloka 20's second half is unambiguous and says something never applied. How do we read the sage's words? Are they his? Please throw light and share with us how you have negotiated this part of the BPHS.

Thank you.

RK
