She gives a really excellent historical survey of temperament, and the full system as related to astrology was only developed rather late. Often the seasons were linked to temperament. I'm sorry--I don't have time or energy to type all the references. For anyone who is interested in temperament as it applies to astrology, Greenbaum's book is the latest word. I do change the charts in the book to the sidereal because I find the signs fit better. For example, for cases of the melancholy temperament in the book, there's a lot of tropical Scorpio emphais. But this is sidereal Libra where Saturn is exalted. (What has Mars to do with melancholy?) It's strange that it hasn't been noted that tropical Scorpio tends to be pessimistic and can be a complainer. There can also be a general lack of self-confidence in that sign--the Sun's fall.
