Guest guest
To the List: In order to better understand the Sidereal Zodiac, and following Therese's suggestion that the ruling and exalted planets attributes strongly influence the " meaning " of the sign, I proceeded to " mind dump " my thoughts for all twelve sidereal signs. These are still in the " mind dump " category, and I am still completely unsatisfied with these thoughts in terms of them adding value to my chart readings were I to incorporate them. This dissatisfaction comes from the realization that were I trying to write sign-meanings for the Tropical Zodiac, I could use the same process and end up with much the same meanings. What good is that? This project has been put on hold as I consider other approaches to finding applicable and meaningful material that resonates for me. The first half of each writing is a pretty standard approach. The second half of this writing utilizes an approach that I haven't seen others follow. Please offer comments. Dave ********** The Signs of the Sidereal Zodiac --- ARIES --- Sidereal ARIES April 14th thru May 13th Ruling planet: Mars Exaltation planet: Sun @ 19 Aries Detriment planet: Venus Fall planet: Saturn Fixed Stars in Aries Mirach @ 5:40 Aries, decl'n @ 35:17 Hamal @ 12:55 Aries, decl'n @ 23:09 Planetary Keywords for Mars and Sun in Aries Mars conveys aggressiveness, power-seeking, determination, anger, physical action, anger. Sun conveys ambition, a seeking of praise and recognition, leadership. These characteristics can be extended to include (as noted by Ebertin) the will to live, vitality and vigor, a desire to exercise power. Negative traits include hastiness, stubbornness, an inclination to quarrel over work or ambitions. Aries advances in life due to his/her own efforts, a determination to overcome adversity. Keywords and Phrases for the Moon in Aries Fagan notes that the Moon gains some strength in Aries, seldom relaxing, consistent in their work and attention, gaining more imagination along with increased worrying. They tend to be highly active. Typical Fields of Endeavor Aries is particularly strong for the military professions and for athletes. Aries is good for managers, politicians, dictators in any field or at any level, surgeons. Well-known Aries-Sun People Fagan cites these famous historical Arians: Adolph Hitler, Saddam Hussien, Napoleon, Harry Truman, Queen Elizabeth II, boxers Joe Lewis and Sugar Ray Robinson, and Willie Mays among others. To these names we can add: Lew Alcindor (basketball player), Ann Margret (actress), Susan Atkins (Manson family member), John Audubon (ornithologist), John Wilkes Booth (actor, assassin), Carol Burnett (comedienne), Glen Campbell (singer), Scott Carpenter (astronaut), Judy Collins (singer), Salvador Dali (artist), Glen Ford (actor), Audrey Hepburn (actress), Jack Nicholson (actor), Stevie Wonder (singer). The following comments do not pretend to be a full description of the Aries nature, but do point a way in which key words/phrases can be directly applied to defining the sign of Aries based on the ruling and exalted planets. Character Traits for Aries: A desire to exercise power: The urge to act, to initiate or to complete something thru physical action. Aries thus influences and controls a situation. Attitude and Perceptions for Aries: Aggressiveness, power-seeking, determination...: Aries is focused on their interests and needs, looking for advantages over others, always thinking about success. …conveys ambition, a seeking of praise and recognition: When Aries decides to act, that act is for a purpose. Praise is welcome but recognition for the effort made is more desireable. Feelings for Aries: …seldom relaxing…gaining more imagination along with increased worrying: These attributes affect the feeling-nature of Aries. Something has to be done, but what? What will happen if I don't act? Worries are more focused on the Aries individual, less on others. This factor can turn inward in terms of stress, which then can rebound outward toward others. Actions for Aries: …anger, physical action: Aries is quick to react, believes in hands-on solutions, takes offense over that which assaults his/her pride. …a desire to exercise power: Being in control, using minimum effort, is the Aries way. Social Interactions for Aries: Leadership: Leading means often being ahead of the group, but not so far ahead as being a target. One has to remain close to the group and to have a shared identity. Hastiness, stubbornness…quarrel over work…: Aries' personal clock and time scale is not that of other or of a group. One can't push a string. Personal Success in the Life of the Arian: …the will to live: Arians throw " their whole selves in " to quote from the popular song, Hokey-Pokey. Narrative Description for Sidereal Aries: The stereotypical Arian embodies aggressiveness in their participation in life and in their interactions with others, pushing their way to the front of the line or making themselves heard, and often taking some form of action to demonstrate their presence. Leadership for an Aries involves actions that demonstrate their capability and energy—whether that action consists of something physical, words and pointed arguments, or aggressive decisions that move others from their path and intentions. Aries shows a will to live and prevail, an energy that some might see as persistence but which is actually a never-say-quit part of their core character. (Compare this to tropical Venus-ruled Taurus). Interactions with others are marked by total involvement, talking with a flair of authority, siding with the more active issues and people, often re-stating (some would call it summarizing) a point so as to move the conversation forward to completion, thereby sharing in the solution. " No " is not in an Aries dictionary, " perhaps " means yes, and " yes " isn't needed as whatever was talked about has already been started or completed. " Flash " might be a good nickname for an Aries person. Boredom is not what the Aries is looking for, something has to be happening somewhere, the Aries should be there or should be causing something to happen. Restless and constant energy expenditure contrasts with occasional rest and assessment periods. Expended energy has to be replaced, even grudgingly. Emotional experiences tend to be suddenly " on " and often quick in their passing, strongly felt in their moment. Emotional release is " prey-oriented " , when others feel a worry, a loss, a vulnerability, then the Aries jumps into the situation, prepared to engage and change the world. Often, this approach to how others feel is overdone, too much, too quick. The Aries' own emotions rise and sink constantly, often contributing to the zest that is shown to others. Moon & Planets in Aries (speculative) Moon in Aries: Emotional response is of the hair-trigger type, fast to arise, quick to dissipate. A restless nature, actively seeking out nuances to worry about (shades of Tropical Pisces). Mercury in Aries: Acutely perceptive, quick to observe and categorize. Angry response when triggered, quick to offer points of view. Moon & Planets in Aries (speculative), continued. Venus in Aries: Some lack of sensitivity with an overdose of passion and acquisitiveness, being seen as " grabby " . Very forward in their interactions. Mars in Aries: Heightens one's aggressiveness and love of physical action, seeks to portray self as an activist in issues of personal interest—the keyword being " personal " as in more self-serving. Jupiter in Aries: Generous-acting, seeking to influence others, over-acting and overly reactive. Saturn in Aries: Guarded in how one acts, deliberative at one point while hasty at another point, not always sure of how to express oneself, actions can show insecurity and less follow-thru. ********* In this very last section I have used only the classical planets. All of the other signs have been completed in the same format as this ARIES section. Dave

Now I understand the nature of your research. One aspect you haven't considered is WHY, for example Aries will express differently than Scorpio, both being associated with Mars. This is why I believe the old solar/lunar division of the zodiac is important. In the zodiac theory of planet-sign rulership, each planet owns two signs, and each of those two signs expresses in very different ways based on zodiac structure and solar/lunar symbolism. But traits such as anger and aggression are strictly Mars traits depending on where that planet is situated in the birth chart. I doubt that Aries gets any angrier than any other sign. [Dave:] Sun conveys ambition, a seeking of praise and recognition, leadership. Leadership or standing out from the masses may well be solar. But...the research I've done paints another picture in some respects. There are example solar and lunar personalities on my web site. It's the Moon that wants praise and recognition, who plays to the public. The Sun just goes about its business, wanting to do a good job for the sake of doing a good job. The idea of the Sun wanting praise and recognition is a tropical fallacy based on observed traits of Leo. That's how I see it, anyway. Anyhow, Dave, I like the thoroughness of your outline. The main problem is that without a theory of zodiac structure (for example, why the difference in Aries and Scorpio, both associated with Mars...), right at the beginning we're in danger of introducing incorrect concepts. And the more traits and ideas we dig up from texts and articles, the more we're in danger of making it all a jumble. Many of the traits you've continued to list are (in my experience) strictly planetary. Of course, this is a general problem with books that describe tropical signs. The Fagan/Allen group more or less got bogged down in the same dilemma. Fagan et al didn't have time to do research on many charts. So they, too, listed traits they **believed** to be associated with signs. It all goes back to the need for an underlying theory of signs that's more than traits of ruling planets.
