Therese, you have to study more about the history of Western traditional astrology before you can really analyze the differences and influences between Hellenistic and Arabic/Medieval astrology. It's a continuum, there's no insurmountable gaps. But I'll do as you ask me and refrain from writing for now. Best, Sari

Sari, I d to the Project Hindsight translations in the 90s and have all of them on my book shelf along with some very expensive university publications on ancient astrologies. They have all been deeply studied, and I have personally rejected some of the changes that happened in Medieval and later astrology. The authors of the early texts had no computers. All was transcribed and recorded by hand. Texts went through many translations. All kinds of errors and the opinions of the authors crept into the texts. There were massive changes and additions without a clear trend of how they came about. This is true especially in Bonatti. It seems that you are getting much of what you've posted from Abu Ma'shar. He and Valens (who wondered around collecting astrologers' practices and put them all in his books) departed from Ptolemy in assigning elements to the signs. This was an error in my opinion because the symbolism isn't consistent--it doesn't hold together. This can be easily checked out by studying the charts in Greenbaum's book. Long ago in the 80s I worked out the humors and sidereal signs, also bringing in comprehensive material from Dean's Recent Advances in Natal Astrology as well as the Gauquelin notes on the planets. 40 years of deep study must amount for something! The primary test of correctness can be worked out by noting illness in relation to planets and signs in the horoscope (using transits and solar returns). This is why we need the help of the medical profession to help validate astrology. Physical illness brings it all down to the level of what we can observe with our physical senses. Right from the beginning there has been disagreement among astrologers on some of the basics. The tropical zodiac brought in additional division. But the good part of all this is that astrology can be quite an adventure for us in the 21st century! We have the thousands of horoscopes and dedicated astrologers to begin to sort it all out. And we have ADB to check out thousands of charts. The reason for not bringing in the elements in the study of Jyotish until an advanced stage is that the Greek elements are totally different from how the elements are understood in Jyotish. It's the same kind of confusion that exits between tropical and sidereal signs. It's a big mental jump to remember that two signs called 'Capricorn' are entirely different from each other. Perhaps you can refer Shiv to a forum or two where Arabic astrology is discussed? Thank you, Therese
