Hi Liath, The Fagan school isn't really into houses and rulers. Those astrologers mostly talk about which planets are closest to the angles. When I said that the president's 10th ruler is Mars, that meant that Mars-ruled Aries was the 10th sign from the Cancer ascendant. I use a house system that makes the ascendant degree the center of each house all around the chart. This is an old Hindu system that isn't used by western siderealists. There is so much debate about house systems that I don't use any of the quadrant systems (systems that make the M.C. the cusp of the 10th house). Interestingly some tropical astrologers have returned to the ancient system of sign-as-house since research hasn't verified any house system. Just for comparison I always recommend Hart DeFouw's LIGHT ON LIFE as an outstanding reference book for questions about sidereal astrology from the Vedic/Indian viewpoint. There's a new edition available on Amazon.com. (Blue-green cover) If you decide to buy the book be sure to get the new edition since the pages of the old edition (red cover) are already yellowing and brittle. >I'm also shopping around for a PC planetarium program. The very best program for astrologers is SkyMap Lite unless you want a few million stars and a few extras in which case you can buy SkyMap Pro. You can download a demonstration version of SkyMap Pro here: http://www.skymap.com/smp_eval.htm The Pro program is about the same as the Lite program, so you can see what it does. the Home Page is here with links to what each program includes and also screen shots: http://www.skymap.com/index.html Comparison of features is here: http://www.skymap.com/comparison.htm Screen shots are here: http://www.skymap.com/smp_samples.htm There are two ways to set the screen: The blurry bit-map stars and the more solid stars which show up as solid circles by size and color. I don't know why the stars are all white in the web screen shot. They come up beautifully colored in the actual program Day stars on a blue sky are white, the night view has colored stars. You can tone the sky any way you want, even setting a separate dusk and dawn color. Mine is lavender. You can get the ecliptic grid, RA/Decl grid or Altitude/azimuth grid. The entire program can be adjusted any which way by the user. It's an outstanding program. The manual is on disk--no printed manual. YOu can set the sky and line colors any way you want them, but the on-line screen shot colors are (in my opinion) ugly compared to how my colors are set. There is also a web discusson group where users can ask any questions they want to and Chris (the programmer) will reply. If you order the program, don't mention astrology. For some reason Chris doesn't want to touch esoteric topics. Too bad, as his program is superb for astrologers. SkyMap Lite is $47. Pro is $129. The Pro version is mostly for users who want to use the program with telescopes. I have an older Lite version which I love. It's completely adequate for astrologers as well as just about eveyone else. Hope this info helps! Therese
Guest guest
Thanks so much Therese! Very helpful. Gramalkin asked the Fagan folk some time ago to share their knowledge with the next generation. I think a new book would be go a long way in that direction.
