Kriya is a specific yogic brething exercise that is said to burn karmic seeds gathered during multiple incarnations. One breath exercise is said to be equal to a year of normal life--going about our usual duties and distractions but slowly evolving spiritually. Practicing Kriya can shorten the million years of normal evolution to one or a few lifetimes. In order to receive the Kriya technique a person has to enroll in Yogananda's lessons, and practice preliminary exercises given along the way. Kriya initiation is given after a year's study. Yes, I practice the Kriya technique, but not the number of times I should be practicing after following the teachings for so many years. I find the technique so powerful that I have to take it slow. (How much old karma can we face at once?!) But some disciples can do all 108 breathing exercises (that is, practice the technique 108 times). I don't know if this is because they have a lot more 'dense matter' to plow through or if they're just further along than I am. During practice you can feel the potent energy affecting the body and mind. Anyhow, if you're consciously headed toward liberation, if that is your main life goal, Kriya is one way to get there fast. But the inner trip is accepting one of the SRF gurus as your guru. I mean, it has to be an inner experience and conviction that you belong to one of the gurus, most likely a continuation from past lives. However, an earlier techinique (Hong Sau) can be given to anyone. That technique is simply a slower Kriya, and is given in the lessons after three months, as I remember. Sometimes touring ministers have seminars where this technique is given. Recommended: The entire Kriya philosophy is contained in Kriyananda's ESSENCE OF THE BHAGAVAD GITA, just released to Amazon.com this September. I'm not affiliated with Kriyananda, but am finding his book much easier to understand than the official (SRF) Gita: GOD TALKS WITH ARJUNA. I haven't finished the book, but I doubt that the actual technique is in the book, only the background philosophy and the inner meaning of the Gita according to Yogananda (which is the evolution of the soul). There is no doubt--these techniques are sacred initiations into the spiritual life under the guidance of a Guru. Sorry, long reply to a short question!
