Sari: There is " Bhava Bala " , which is a similar way to evaluate the strength of houses, but I haven't used it, so I cannot say if it works. I use shadbala and I believe it has truth in it, though I'm not completely sure, what it exactly tells. I don't think it tells about the auspiciousness of a planet, like some say. Some even say that it tells about the evolutionary level of a planet! I wouldn't be so sure about that either. I basically think that it simply tells about the strength. Then we just have to think what the planets really are about. If you think that shadbala strength of Mercury in verbally / linguistically skilled people's charts is not a deciding factor, then there's still the fact, that those people had clearly less exalted or own sign Mercurys than average people - so, I don't think that Mercury's connection with verbal skills is settled. One way could be to systemically study the shadbala strengths of the 2nd house rulers. Therese wrote: Bettina, from what I know about you, you are almost anti-Jupiter in personality and outlook. ShadBala is one of those Indian ways of rating planets that I question. I know it's supposed to have to do with how strong the planets are in our makeup. ShadBala is just one more reminder that we have to question almost everything we think we know about astrology. Sari: But here we come to the question, what Jupiter is about? What is a Jupiterian personality like? I have too a very strong Jupiter in shadbala. One possibility for shadbala strenght could be that it doesn't necessarily tell about the nature of a person per se, but about the strongest themes in a person's (outer) life, and also about things and people a person values and feels drawn to. A person with a strong Jupiter draws Jupiterian experiences and Jupiterian people to her life. When a dasa period of a strong planet is running, a person has a lot of stuff happening in the outer life, lot of powerful experiences, it will be time remembered. On a dasha of a weak planet, the life is more quiet and the it's more like " I don't feel like living, I'm just alive " , because the current themes don't excite any strong passions. They may be things happening, good things, bad things, but they don't feel that important. I calculate dasas by Raman ayanamsa, so they're a bit difference to the ones calculated by Lahiri/Krishnamurti. And this is only a hypothesis, not any kind of final conclusion about the nature of shadbala strength. Regards, Sari
