The best comprehensive book on Jyotish is Hart deFouw and Robert Svoboda's LIGHT ON LIFE. It's not perfect, but many feel it's the best book out there. There's a very nice little transitional book (emphasizes the comparison between western and Jyotish) that I'd recommend reading before LIGHT ON LIFE: THE CIRCLE OF STARS by Valerie J. Roebuck. This is the very best introduction to Jyotish in my opinion. There may be some used copies on Amazon. Definitely worth having. When I bought my copy, it was only $11. Now it's one of those 'print on demand' books. It's British, which is why we don't hear about it much in the USA. I don't use the square charts though. I think the usual western circle charts are much easier to read. For Hellenistic, Robert Schmidt's first book was due out yesterday. This book should be a really good introduction to Hellenistic astrology. All the smaller translations that were done in the 90s by Project Hindsight are excellent, but most of them are out of print. A good introductory book to western traditional astrology is Joseph Crane's A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO TRADITIONAL ASTROLOGY. The problem with that book is that he mixes Hellenistic with later classical astrology, and doesn't always distinguish between the two. It's a good indtroduction to classical astrology, though. Details are on the ARHAT website. Also the ARHAT books are sold through Amazon. There are some good articles on the Project Hindsight web site that can be printed. Robert Schmidt is giving a week long seminar on Hellenistic astrology if you have the $$$ and times to attend. The details will be on the Project Hindsight web site. PH also sells tapes, but I never liked to listen to tapes. Neither do I have the stamina to attend seminars, so I always wait for the printed editions. Also you can ask questions here. Oh...there's another source. If you join the Youngastro list, way back there somewhere are some very good Hellenistic posts by Bill Johnston that can be printed. But you'd have to go back page by page to find them. I think most of them are from late 2004-2005...a few this year maybe. It's helpful to have a good reference library to check now and then, but I don't actually read through all the books in my library. I use them for reference when I want to see what writers say about a particular topic. One small topic or one planet at a time when checking references. Otherwise I'd never remember anything! I usually get that look, if you know what I mean, when I explain I want to look at their chart, but I've become immune to it.
