Explaining the 5/4's progression rate between S/R charts.

I have asked this question on the Physics of Sidereal site and am

repeating it here, hoping the larger membership may provide some

answers or comments.

" What is the rational and explanation for Fagan's promotion of using

the 5/4's symbolic rotation of the Solar Return angles between

successive Solar Returns? " Calculating PSSR charts, wherein the MC

moves about 1.25 degrees per day, results in the relocation of the

Sun's house position in successive Solar Returns, placing the Sun

about three houses ahead of its prior S/R position. This is true of

all types of Solar Returns and is a well recognized fact.

I realize that this phenomena is related to the earth's orbit and

the 365.25 rotations of the earth in each year. But, Fagan glossed

over this process in his Primer of Sidereal Astrology after having

done a nice concise presentation of the calculation of Secondary

Progressions. He clearly intended the first explanation to support

and lead into the PSSR progression explanation -- but its clarity

escapes me.

I am writing a small book at this time that examines Natal, Solar

Return and PSSR angles and their interpretive meanings. I have

found over the last 3 decades that the PSSR angles, when making

frequent contact with Solar Return and Natal chart angles, have very

specific and helpful interpretations that can be applied. This

short book, which will be placed into Adobe's .pdf format and be

made available in the Files section, will hopefully prove

interesting and helpful to those who use PSSRs. I just want to make

sure that my explanation of the progression rate, and how it is

derived, will be clear. Thank you. Dave.

Dave,

I don't know if I have a rationale for the PSSR rate itself, but there

is an essential difference in the nature the Quotidian and PSSR rates.

The Quotidian is based on a correspondance of the _time period_ of one

rotation of the earth following the Solar Return with the period of one

sidereal year following the return. The motions of the planets through

the zodiac and around the mundane sphere during a single sidereal day

are " projected " out through the following year to give indications of

possible events.

The PSSR rate, however, is not based on equating a shorter period of

time with a longer period. In the course of a year the sidereal time of

the PSSR chart advances about 30 hr. 09 min. 13 sec. on average, but

this should _not_ be thought of as the 30+ hours immediately following

the solar return. If that were so the planets motions through those

first 30 hours of the year would be the unique " progressed " positions

for the PSSR chart, whereas Cyril Fagan said that the progressed planets

of the PSSR were the same as the Quotidian. The reason for this is that

the PSSR is as you wrote just a " symbolic " rotation of the angles

_through the course of the entire year_. There is no real 30 hours of

time involved. The angles of the Solar Return simply advance 1 1/4

degrees every day until they " catch up " with the angles of the next

years Solar Return. Therefore there is a continuous " progression " of the

angles from one Solar Return to another throughout one's lifetime.

You may be already familiar with this information yourself Dave, but

then maybe someone who has not heard of the PSSR progression can

benefit.

| Gary is right about what he said. It is a continuous motion That

| moves from one to the next Solar Return in a straight smooth motion

| of 1 1/4 degree per day. The SQ progression maintains the Hour

| Angle of the Sun, the rotation of the angles expressed as an

| encress in the Right Ascension of the Apparent Sun against the

| constant of the Hour Angle. (LHAS)

~ Because the PSSR moves 1 1/4 degree per day, if a planet is

near an angle at the time of the SSR, it is likely to make a pass over

the same angle shortly before the expiration of the current, and start

of the next Solar Return.

For Bert and Gary,

Thank you for your comments. I've used the PSSRs for very many

years and have been pleased with their consistency. Of course, I

use some techniques along with them that others may not. My problem

was not so much as calculating or using them, but finding the

clearest manner for explaining their basis. I had been questioned

about this and upon looking at Fagan's explanation in the Primer of

Sidereal Astrology, I found his answer or rational to be unclear. I

am soliciting " explanations " in terms of " why " the system is valid

relative to astrological practice so as to better teach others.

Thank you for your responses. Dave.
