Guest guest
From todays situation report: Thought you might like to see this: _ 1728 GMT - Ukraine's Central Election Commission officially set Dec. 26 as the date for the re-run of the now-invalid Nov. 21 presidential run-off election, spokeswoman Natalia Trofimova said. The two candidates on the ballot will be Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich and Viktor Yushchenko. 1720 GMT - A near compromise between factions in the Ukrainian Parliament collapsed Dec. 4, leading to a 10-day adjournment of parliament. The compromise would have reformed the country's electoral laws and changed the makeup of the Central Election Commission, which had approved the results of the Nov. 21 presidential runoff election that the Supreme Court later declared fraudulent and invalid. Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko had hoped to capitalize on the court decision to push the reforms through, but a pro-government coalition of legislators wanted those changes in exchange for reforms that would have watered down the president's powers in favor of parliament. Yushchenko's supporters had hoped to push off debate of those reforms until after the new runoff election, scheduled for Dec. 26.
