Erra, I remember struggling with Shil Ponde's definition of houses a long time when I was learning Hindu astrology. No one has heard of Shil-Ponde since his book was published 30 years ago. First we have to define 'cusp.' This is based on the degree of the ascendant rising over the Eastern horizon at birth. Whether we call the cusp the center of the house (as in India) or the beginning of the house (as in western countries) it is still the power point of strongest influence in the house. Apparently Shil Ponde invented the concept of the 'rising point,' which has no support either in Indian or western texts, old or new. However, he is correct that it is the 'rise' of the first Indian equal house. However, the point itself is very weak, since it is the degree farthest from the equal house cusps according to the traditional Indian equal house system. Guest guest
I wonder if Shil-Ponde was a tentative Volguine as in the same book the method for calculating the Rising Point involves the use of the sunrise time. So perhaps it comes from one of the less well known systems of Hindu astrology - perhaps palmleaf or Tamil astrology ??

We don't know what is on those palm leaves and there's no English transltion of most of Tamil astrology. Therese
