Philosophy is not everyone's cup of tea. Do you prefer classical

tragedy? Astrological ideas were expressed in the tragic theater of

classical Greece. The tragedy of Oedipus the King, by Sophocles,

would likely have been performed at the cultural center Epidaurus,

built 400-360 BC. Sophocles lived from 496-406 BC. We can be certain

the ideas presented in the play and in the architecture of the Tholos

were contemporary. In the tragedy of Oedipus, Laius, ruler of Thebes

is told in an oracle that his son will kill him. This oracle was

probably a horoscope! The earliest known horoscope is dated April 29,

410 BC (Fagan) -also within the historical time frame of Epidaurus.

Laius attempts to put the baby away. Oedipus lives, and as a young

adult, is told by the oracle at Delphi that he will kill his father

and marry his mother. At this point the tragic theme of return and

revenge becomes dramatic plot, a fate beyond the will or knowledge of

the victims. Ideas about return -good or evil- are main themes in

astrology. They are as important as astronomy in understanding

astrology.
