I don't plan to frequent the site, but might look into one of Choudhry's basic books. I noticed that what he calls the most significant point of a house (equal 30 degrees from the ascendant) is something I've been using for many years, based on experience. It's this ascendant point extended to the other 11 houses that helps to differentiate charts of people born close together in time. It's too bad that in astrology--like in everything else--a system becomes 'systematized' and then those who disagree are scorned or rejected. What was once exciting innovation becomes immutable law among the followers. Thanks again for the lowdown--very interesting! I've noted on several astrological sites that it's rather dangerous to disagree with the owner of the site. Well, at least we have sites for all the different viewpoints! Guest guest
Therese (...) means that sentences have been left out for this post. The SAMVA site seems to have a lot of cooperative discussion of actual astrology without personal attacks against those who disagree (from my limited reading since discovering the site yesterday). It's true there are not a lot of personal attacks there, like on most vedic lists where the standards of decorum are mostly respected. But a lot of the conflict is beneath the surface. I used to be a participating member of SAMVA until I got the heave ho a couple of months ago. Here's the lowdown as I see it. 1) Systems Approach is worth learning, but it is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. 2) SAMVA is a good list because they actually talk about technique in a constructive and thorough way -- something I can't say I see much of here nor on many other western lists. Perhaps the proliferation of techniques make it impossible for any debate to resolved one way or another. 3) one reason for this attitude of working through a problem is because the number of rules is limited. There is very little disagreeement amongst members on most points of interpretation. 4) this is largely due the fact that there is a cult of personality around the founder of systems approach, VK Choudhry. Any statements of interpretation that differ from his statements or his rules are denigrated. If the disagreement is not withdrawn, then the offender is ignored. If the free-thinker persists in his unapproved opinions, he is purged/banned/ex-communicated. I was banned not because I insisted that the rules were wrong (I knew that was wasted energy) but because I questioned the ethical practice of selling kavaches (lucky talismans) by Choudhry and his adherents on another list. (the SAMVA moderator d to this list, and once his sensibilities were offended, he could not accept having me as part of his universe) These kavaches cost 150USD and up and have dubious value. Most are marketed to Indians whose income is a fraction of the US average. The systems approach site claims that the kavaches alleviate or cure depression, diabetes, cancer, etc, etc. In other words, snake oil of the worst kind. So if you're interested in learning about doing mundane astrology the vedic way, check it out by all means. There are concepts there well worth learning. Just don't expect to have a willing audience for ideas that fall outside the norm. Chris ---------------------------- > Message 5652 > " Th. Also 2L Jupiter is placed in 10H. Kerry has always been prominent in public life but never " the leader " in Congress. He, however, aspires to be the leader. The so called MEP or most effective point of each house are simply aspects to the ascendant. But the real heads up here is that the planets that fall on these points assume qualities of the house. So instead of simply seeing Mars in semisextile to the Asc in the 12th house, Mars is actually on the MEP of the 12th house and therefore act on 12th house matters, depending on its rulership, etc. NB Under systems approach, planets are largely stripped of their natural qualities and act in accordance to their mulatrikona rulership. So if Aries is ruling a good house, then Mars becomes a benefic. While I agree on the importance of rulerships, I think this bends the stick too far the other way.
