Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men

racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for

the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows

compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen

pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion

storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that

Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their

films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed

a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and

dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns,

and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John

Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda

possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and

listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as

if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power

and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

The title of this CD says it all!, December 22, 1998

Reviewer: war.eagle (Francis Amar) from Williamstown,

New Jersey

Any football fan who does not own this CD is missing out. Like an epic

clash of football titans, this cd never disappoints, from its fast start,

through poignant moments in between, and a climactic conclusion. The

orchestral sounds from Sam Spence, Tom Redden, and David Robidoux serve to

remind us that know, and to inform those that don't, that there is a nexus

between football and grace. The voice of John Facenda, while harkening us

back to days gone by, reinforces that element of class and " hard muscle

glory " ,with selections like " November " , " The Autumn Wind " and " The Power and

The Glory " .

To me, its the music that makes this cd a classic. The music takes me

back to hours spent watching NFL Films and to specific moments in football

history. And while each piece has its place in football history, they also

have a crossover appeal. My favorite, " The Pony Soldiers " brings back

memories of the AFL and of men like Daryle Lamonica, Len Dawson, Buck

Buchanan, Don Maynard, Lance Alworth and others, of Super Bowl VI

(Dallas-Miami), of Billy Kilmer, George Allen and the Over the Hill Gang,

but it could easily be the opening score from a Spaghetti Western with Clint

Eastwood. " The Raiders " and " Cossacks Charge " have also have multiple

conotations.

Revisit the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field and Lombardi, November 13,

1998

Reviewer: A music fan from Charleston, West Virginia

Anyone who has ever enjoyed watching NFL films has to have this CD.

Listening to the CD causes you to remember the legendary NFL games between

Bart Starr and Dick Butkus; Daryle Lamonica and Len Dawson; or Johnny Unitas

and Joe Namath. The late John Facenda adds commentary to some of the musical

selections , but his voice is not obtrusive but is a pleasure to enjoy. My

favorite selections are " The Pony Soldiers " and " Lombardi " . The music on

this CD has not been available to the public since the early 70's when NFL

films issued some LPs that were difficult to locate. The only thing missing

when listening to the CD is the snow and cold of Soldier Field and

Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis.

John Facenda: NFL Films Voice Gave Viewers Goosebumps, December 15,

2002

Reviewer: Kevin Nieman (see more about me) from Thousand Oaks, CA

United States

If you watched NFL Films from the Sixties and Seventies, you know the

sound of the voice of NFL Films, John Facenda. Facenda became the Voice of

the NFL long before guys like Madden and Michaels reigned on high.

Facenda's recital of epic-sounding poetry made the game of

professional football seem like a life-or-death struggle for much larger

stakes than the simple outcome of a game. He helped make the film clips of

games seem like visual poetry, and he helped created a soundscape of the

game that will never be captured again.

If you have ever enjoyed the NFL Films TV programs of the past, and

you appreciate the contributions John Facenda and composer Sam Spence, this

CD is a MUST for your Wish List.

Damn! What a CD!, November 25, 2002

Reviewer: A music fan from Apple Valley, Minnesota United States

I bought this CD to be background music while I sit in my den (read

Packer Museum) working on my computer. Initially, hoping that John Facenda

would offer up a baritone " Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field " . Even though this

phrase doesn't exist on this first volume ( :-), I know it will exist on the

second. This compilation is everything you would expect and more, a

recommended 'must' for every football fan.
