I'm going to call up all the charts in the Rodden/McDonough astrodatabank with Mars in the 10th closely squaring the ascendant. I'll sort the charts by the sign of Mars and see what turns up. Maybe you're right! Then I'll search for all the charts with Mars conjunct the MC. I know that in his book on solar returns, Jim Eshelman uses the secondary angles of squares to the ASC/DEC. Do you use these? I feel that at least the upper square is very important in finding the important planets in the chart. I can use my own chart as an example. I have Neptune and Venus closely squaring my Ascendant. They're in sidereal Virgo. (1) I've studied and taught art in the public schools (Venus in a Mercury-ruled sign). I used to draw and paint, but don't anymore. Astrology takes all my time. (2) I've maarried and had a a few children (just plain old Venus) (3) I have university degrees in psychology (Neptune in a Mercury-ruled sign) (4) I've had a lifetime interest in astrology and wrote and published a lot of aricles. Also I do a lot of research. Neptune combined with Mercury probably has to do with discovery and research, because Neptune breaks down boundaries (explores) and Mercury is the math and mental analysis used for reserach. (My Neptune sextiles Mercury.) Now, how would you isolate my Virgo type activities if you don't look at the sign my Venus/Neptune conjunction is in??? O.K., now for the M.C. The only planet that's close to my M.C. is Mars. How does this express in my life? I hate conflict, except for astrological discussions (My Mercury is in Scorpio in mutual reception to Mars in Virgo.) I can't stand emotional discord because my Venus is so strong. But I will fight for justice if I see someone is being wronged. I never did anything professionally related to Mars, but I do have Mars/Mercury skills. I just helped my husband build a small greenhouse, which I designed. Actually, I built it, while he assisted (somewhat). So I would say that Neptune/Venus is part of my basic psychology (I'm really into the spiritual as well as psychology and astrology), but that Mars manifests in Mars-Mercury type skills and the willingness to fight for what I see is right--but not in public ways, only on the personal level. I didn't join the peace marches, for example, and you won't see me in groups acting for a cause. And I have always hated sports, never had any sports ability whatsoever--can't even balance enough to ride a bike. But if I see a mother being harsh with her child in a store, I'll (gently) ask the mother if I can help in some way so she stops abusing the child. Juan, I'm trying to get your opiniion of how you see planets conjunct the M.C. as opposed to planets square the ascendant from the vacinity of the 10th. Also, how would you tell how planets manifest without considering the lord of the signs they are in? I'm Virgo through and through, but how would you know if you didn't consider Virgo in the chart? (My Mercury is in either the 12th or the 11th, depending on what house system you use. It's 31 degrees above the ascendant and does not aspect the M.C. or I.C.
