Books on Astrology

I did plan to leave this board, but it's nice to see a post that isn't

bashing someone else. Here are a few books I recommend:

 

For an overview of ancient western astrological techniques compared to the

modern:

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO TRADITIONAL ASTROLOGY by Joseph Crane, published by

Arhat, 1997.

 

The best book on Jyotish (Indian astrology) is Hart DeFouw and Robert

Svoboda's LIGHT ON LIFE. Penguin/Arkana 1996.

 

For the use of sidereal solar and lunar returns my favorite book is James

Eshelman's INTERPRETING SOLAR RETURNS. But I don't know if this book is

still in print. (And there are errors of interpretation in the book.)

 

Just to keep your history straight: CHRONOLOGY OF THE ASTROLOGY OF THE

MIDDLE EAST AND THE WEST BY PERIOD by Robert hand, Arhat. Only $2.50, a

good reference.

 

I've thrown out all the quadrant house systems based on my own experience.

I use the house system called " Indian equal house. " The ascendant degree is

the cusp of all the houses (in every sign), but the house extends 15

degrees on either side of the cusp. 'Cusp' means peaking point, not

beginning. I use sign-as-house for the Indian yoga combinations. I use the

Krishnamurti ayanamsa and make extensive use of the navamsa chart.

 

I purchased all my western sidereal books (Fagan-Bradley school) long ago

when they were in print. I'm not sure what is available now, but other

members of this board (if they can stop shouting at each other...I simply

cannot believe recent posts on this board) can probably help you there. I

read ALL books with caution. I like LIGHT ON LIFE, but I disagree with some

of the material in the book. I also don't always agree with Jim Eshleman

(who is now an attorney). And I hate square charts. Stay with glyphs and

the circular chart. They are a lot more intuitive. I redraw any square

charts I see in books.

 

Main thing is, read with an open mind and don't accept anything just

because someone says something. We're all human....we all make mistakes and

misjudge. There are no astrological Gods. We're all flawed and have a lot

to learn.

 

Arhat has a web site where books can be ordered. But maybe all these books

are available from astroamerica.com. Dave at astroamerical keeps shipping

costs down and is very prompt. LIGHT ON LIFE can be ordered and purchased

at any book store.

 

Please write to me, Shamira, if you have any questions. There is no good

material out there on the meanings of sidereal signs, except that sidereal

planets are strong in their own and exaltation signs. I have material for a

web site ready to go. Maybe in January.

That's the theory, but it's not always so simple! There are western

sidereal ideas and Jyotish (Vedic) ideas. It takes a lot of experience to

get it right. It's still not always clear to me.
