Guest guest
Varun ji, science says that it is not possible that snake sips milk. Saparas do sometimes pour it down its throat for monetary benefit and i am told that it is extremely painful for snake to digest it. U have given the option of pouring milk on snake head curling a shivling in a symbolic people. Saanp ko doodh pilana muhavara means keeping such a person in good humour or help someone whom u know could be potential danger to you. Plz give your reasoned and seasoned opinion on this. Respect and regards. Kulbir. -- Sent from my mobile device
Guest guest
Dear Kulbir bhai. You are right. It is a scientific fact that a snake doesn’t drink milk as a component of its diet. At the most it might flick his tongue over the milk tasting the air. This flicking the tongue is taken to mean that the snake is drinking the milk, but it is not true. This upaya of feeding milk to the snakes seems to have been suggested to appease Saturn and keep it cool. This upaya has been specifically suggested for Saturn and moon combination. Now a days, it is very difficult to find snakes even in the villages let alone in a city. Therefore an alternative to this upaya had to be thought of. In place of this upaya we have changed the form and instead recommend bathing a Shiva Sarp with milk, a stone snake wrapped around the Shivling. We consider it a better option then the cruelty of forcing the milk down the throat of a snake. Cruelty against a snake can not appease it. The logic of this upaya are : [ a ] A stone snake signifies Saturn both in its shape and the material it is made of. [ b ] Traditionally Mrityunjaya mantra is used to appease Saturn. This mantra is a stuti of Lord Shiva. Therefore bathing a shivling with a snake wrapped round it serves both the purposes; appeasing Lord Shiva who in turn keeps Saturn under control and secondly also appeasing Saturn in the form of a stone snake. We do not know if others have a better alternative in mind. Guest guest
Respected Bhanot ji, A stone snake would be the best. But you are right that in most of the shiva temples it is the brass or metal snake used as a chhatra over the shivling. If a stone snake is not found then there is no alternative but to do the upaya on the metal snake because after all that too is a shiv- sarp. I believe there should be no adverse effect of it because the sankalp of the upaya is to feed milk to a shiv-sarp, irrespective of what it is made of. Guest guest
Bhanot ji, you have a keen sense of observation. This makes u stand apart from being lakir ka fakir. The bhavna part is of utmost important. We have a bhavna to appease saturn or to cool it down. But as noted by yourself the snakes of stone are rare. Either it is brass or alminium. If steel iron or even silver would have been there it could have been logical but this is not the case. So it calls for an opinion of seniors. Regards. Kulbir.
