Respected Sir,

1. During my reading a Lal Kitab – I gone thorough that – upaya are

recommended for 43 day – Sir what is the reason behind that.

2. Second I have read in some Lal Kitab related topic – If you can not

continue for 43 days or you have any apprehension for non – continuity

of any upaya – than one should have to keep few rice washed in milk

and continue the upaya from where he has left – any reason/logic

behind that for washing rice with milk & keeping at home.

Please guide.

Regards,

Shailesh

Respected Shailesh ji,

[ 1 ] The Lal Kitab gives two reasons to arrive at 40 days + 3

riyaytee days figure.

1952 Urdu ed: page 36 note # 2 says

‘ chunki ginti ke lambe hisab ko is ilma mein udane

ke liye 28 nakshatra aur 12 rasiyon ko baad mein

chhor hi diya jata hai isliye dono ki jama 28+12 = 40

din kam z kam ya jyada se jyada 43 din riyaytee tak

upaya ka asar poora hoga’

The same as above has been said on page 85 / lines

3 & 4 of 1942 Urdu ed.

Therefore the first reason to get the upaya done for

a minimum of 40 days and a maximum of 43 days is

the number arrived at by adding the number of 28

constellations and 12 zodiac signs. Three days have

been added as riyaytee [ of concession]

The second reason for the upaya to be done for at

least 40 days is :

The 1942 edition while discussing the years of deceit

[ dhoke ke saal ] during the maha dasha period claims

that there will be 40 such years in a life time. The

40 days of upaya is for these 40 years.

“ in hi 40 mande saalon ke dhoke ko kholne ke

Therefore the second reason to decide upon 40

days upaya is based on the concept of 40 years

of possible deceit during the maha dashas.

As per the Lal Kitab these are the two reasons for

doing the upaya for a minimum of 40 days.

[ 2 ] When there is an apprehension that the continuity of upaya might get broken for some reason then there is a vidhan [procedure] of keeping rice rinsed in milk by way of 'sankalp'

This is a traditional form of making a 'sankalp'. In this case the 'sankalp' is that you will complete the upaya as soon as it is possible. Traditionally people keep either a haldi ganth or a little rice at home when they make a mental 'sankalp' to do complete some religious vow. You might have noticed that when people declare their sankalp to make an offering to God equal to that of 101 rupees , they keep the money aside right at that time. That too is a way of 'sankalp'.

Therefore keeping rice [ moon] rinsed in milk [moon] is symbolic that you swear by moon to complete the upaya or Moon is the witness of your vow.
