the followers of Baba (Pir) Suthrey Shah. They are nomadic people,

begging is the main source of their livelihood. they usually wear a

special attire while going to beg alms. They wear large steel

bangles (Kada) in their arms and also keep small sticks in their

hand. The beat the bangles with their sticks to announce their

arrival in the area. They are not the common beggars, and dont just

approach anyone for the alms, they rather approach only those who

have an " agreement " with them.

Suthras can still be found in the Sangrur and Bhatinda Districts of

Punjab. There are lot of idioms/phrases regarding their carefree

nature in Punjabi:

following lines from Encyclopedia of Sikh Literature, Guru Shabad

Ratnakar, Mahaan Kosh page no.788 by Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha (a very

prominent Sikh scholar/historian). I am reproducing the paragraph as

it is in Punjabi to give you the most authentic and historic

He was thrown away since declared ominous by the astrologers. Guru

Hargobind Singh ji who was returning back from Kashmir, picked up

the baby and adopted him. Guru Sahib raised that baby and named him

Suthrey Shah. He (Suthrey Shah) also remained in the service of Guru
