Dear Kulbir bhai,

These lines occur on page 420 of the 1952 urdu edition;

The actual lines are :

Paani baadal mein bhar kar jaltaa, ret maidanon bharta ho

Ujaar kheti jageer naseebah , afeem khate le satharaa vo

Doodh daulat zar pani deta , narak Chandra ghar dolta ho

Karam dharma chandaali saaya, maan izzat kul phookta ho

The line you seem to have problem with is :

`afeem khate le satharaa vo' which to my mind means that if such a

person eats opium he will be laid on to `satharaa'. In our

colloquial language `satharaa' is a place on the floor where a

person about to die is shifted to from the bed. The line to me means

that if such a person eats opium it will act as a poison for him and

he will soon die.

Have a nice day,

Varun ji, could it be suthara. suthara is a tribe which doesn't care

about savings. they eat whatever they earn. they are not concerned

or worried about future.

Dear Kulbir bhai,

In the book the word is spelled as sa-tha-raa and not as su-tha-raa.

Therefore I take it to read satharaa and not sutharaa.

I do not know what else does the word satharaa mean in the Punjab

area. In UP this word means the death bed or the place where the

dead body is laid before being taken for cremation. This satharaa is

removed only after the terahvee sansakar. But rituals differ from

region to region, therefore there might be different ritual in the

Punjab area.

Have a nice day,

Dear Kulbir bhai,

Never heard of such a tribe in our area of west UP. We have the

Banjara and the Nat who are khanabadosh, moving from one area to

another. But never heard any thing like that they are not attached

to the worldly things or do not care for tomorrow etc.

Any way I have explained in my message to respected Yograj ji what

the word satharaa means to me.

Have a nice day,

Varun ji,

Suthara is a nomadic tribe very common in Punjab Haryana Rajasthan belt. they have a particular practice while eating; they donot store a chapati in a box but straight away consume it from the tawa. they believe there is no guarantee for life so why store.

KHAADA PEETA LAH; SUTHARE DAM DA KI VASAH is a common saying in punjabi.

Now a request to Prabhakar ji,

no need to say u must be familiar with YAARDE DA SAANU SATHAR CHANGA; BHATH KHEDEIYAN DA RAHNA from Mitr pyare Nu by Guru Sahib.

this sathar is not in line with explanation of Varun ji;

Since Varun ji doesn't knoe about suthare, he didn't try that word.

Dear Kulbir Bhai,

Yes in the 1941 ed, page 118 line #14 once again the words

are 'sathare dam ka kya'. Here again the word is spelled as sa-tha-

re and not su-tha-re [ although Yograj ji's ed of 1941 reads su-tha-

re ]
