A house facing south is considered inauspicious for 'Grahasth' or family in general. Therefore the monkey should be of a karak which when joined with saturn and Mars helps the Grahasth or the family in general. Lal Kitab says that the combination of Saturn + Mars + Venus is 'mangal do guna nek, ketu do guna nek' and has been described as very auspicious specially if there is a complimentary life line on the palm. Therefore the monkey should be of clay [ venus ]. [ 2 ] Baked is venus+mars, in this combination the mars will be then further strengthened, all the better. Therefore it should be baked clay. [ 3 ] No, it should not be hollow. Hollow in any thing provides space for the mercury to sneek in. [ 4 ] Since the Lal Kitab mentions monkey, the colour should be like that of our common monkeys, brownish I believe. One can also have a dull red colour [ mars ], not shining red. [ 5 ] generally it is advised that the toy should be kept inside of the house facing the door such that any one who enters the house faces the monkey first. Since this is an upaya for the 8th house [ south], the monkey can not be kept out side of the door because the area out side of the door does not belong to the house. The house ends at the door.
