I can understand that traditionally this may have had some value in easy calculation of the start of the various MDs. However, this custom is still carried on in this era of computers, when it is easy to ascertain the start of the various MDs. Moreover many people in developing countries still don't have access to computer. However, the printed list is also useful for quick reference when studying without the computer.
