Ah, it seems " Thana " was the former name - and the Coordinates appear to be

very similar to Bombay's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thane

I get 72e58 and 19n12

Can someone advise if this is correct for Thane?

Thanks.

Dear Sateeshji,

These are the correct co-ordinates which you

have mentioned.Thane is a suburb of Bombay, and

15 kilometres away from the center of Bombay,

towards North. The local trains are there which

ply from the main VT station to Thane.

These expert politicians are there to spoil the

names prevalent from the olden times which we were

familiar with.

Poona to Pune.

Thana to Thane.

Bombay to Mumbai.

Madras to Chennai.

Calcutta to Kolkata.

Very funny, but we have to live with them,

and the confusions and hocus pocus they

cause.

regards,

Bhaskar.

What moronic ignorance! " Olden times " ?? The Brit Raj, which had to

anglicize the aforementioned names to lessen their pronunciation

difficulties, reigned in our country for 90 years from 1857.

" Very funny, but we have to live with them, and the confusions... " Our

own names sound funny huh? ROTFLMAO!!

dear PJ,

The olden days were different, with refrence

to language.Today is different.

We have been born with familiarity to certain

names, and dont You think " Mumbai " sounds

funnier than " Bombay " on the world atlas ?

Has not the faux-paus of " Thane " created some

trouble to members here ?

If that much faithfulness is there to the

" Olden " and " Indian " then shouldnt we all be

wearing Dhotis and Kurtas and conversing on

Forums in Sanskrit or Hindi ?

Sir,preaching and practicing are

entirely different and so is the

practicability of certain matters.

The Moderator has wisely stepped in and

asked us to concentrate on astrological issues,

which we should be discussing , and not this.

My reply to the intended member was finished,

there was no need

to elongate this matter by You.

I hope you would concentrate on astrology,

in future. And next time you may call India

as " Bharat' as in time of Raja Parikshit

or " Hindu Kush " as in times of

Alexander the Great, but do not

call it India, which also is the corrupted

and modified name from the original.

Dear PJ

The true ignorance of our History is exhibited by your statement " reigned in

our country for 90 years from 1857 " . 1857 was the year of our first war of

independence from the Raj and not the beginning of Raj.

Point taken, though I'd (misleadingly) meant Brit Raj in that sense of

the term.

And thanks for missing the essential element of my post.

If it's Mumbai, it's Mumbai. And no, it's no funnier than Bombay - or

Prague or Budapest, for example. The Aussies and Brits I work with

routinely pronounce my name with a silly-sounding accent.

A proper noun is a proper noun is a proper noun!

Only if the 'members' are moronic, and I'm not saying that they might

not be :)

It is difficult because I have been brought up thinking India and

Indian but Hindustan and Hindustani please me the most.

I'll call it Hindustan because it is the land of Hindus. Always was,

always will be.

Here is something to confuse you further -
