Dear Professor,

My girlfriend, Teresa is having difficulty wearing the

Kavach on a white gold chain. She says that it

irritates the skin and makes her body itch. Is there

another way to wear the Kavach?

What other alternatives are there?

John Dorio

Hi John:

Sorry to jump in here, but I am a jeweler and it highly possible that

the white gold chain is a nickel alloy of white gold, especially if it

was obtained in the US. Almost all white gold sold in the States is a

has nickel in the alloy. If I remember right, almost 10% of the

population has a allergic reaction to nickel. Nickel is banned in the

white gold alloys used in Europe.

An alternative would be to use a palladium based white gold alloy. It

is a premium product so would cost more, but you could also consider a

platinum, titanium or stainless steel chain. Titanium is light, really

tough and usually hypo allergenic. It is my choice for people who wear

something constantly like religious medals and something like the kavach.

Stay away from base metal chains.

You could always use bead cord that you could find at any beading

store. It's hard to beat the comfort of a waxed cotton stringing cord

about 1mm in width. It needs to be replaced every so often but it is

tough and comfortable.

Let me know if I can be of any service.

Best Regards,

Allen
