Guest guest
Dear Professor, I recently learned that Mars is closest to Earth than it has possibly been in thousands of years. I haven't read in the SA literature about any special significance regarding the reduction or increase of proximity to the Earth. Is there anything noteworthy about this or similar situations in your opinion? Best regards, Vyas Munidas

Guest guest
Dear Vyas, I suppose that you are speaking of the news that has been on the Net these days regarding August 2006. That will not happen in 2006. It was true in 2003, when Mars started its retrograde motion exactly in the end of July. Everytime a planet is closer to the Earth it becomes retrograde, and that will not happen with Mars in the next 12 months. Guest guest
Respected Vyas Munidas, Here is an authentic clarification about MARS VISIBILITY AS BIG AS MOON on 27thAug.06. I was skeptical about this circulating message about Mars through various sources. On referring this to my relative who has been associated with Mars Mission NASA ,following clarification has been received. The message about Mars that you asked about is an internet " hoax " that seems to appear every August. Unfortunately, Mars never gets bigger than a bright star, even when it is at its closest point to Earth. In 2003, Mars was the closest to Earth in many thousands of years. But even then it was still just the size of a bright, red star. Sorry to disappoint you! If you lower your expectations a bit, you may still find it interesting to watch Mars when it is at its closest (just look for the red " star " ). The last close approach was November 2005; the next will be December 2007. Nothing is happening this year. Some people also enjoy finding the US space station. Every once in a while, it passes directly overhead and you can watch it quickly go across the sky (also the size of a star). http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/index.html Also you can check on the following Link. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2005/07jul_marshoax.htm?friend " ,0] ); D([ " ce " ]); //--> Bipin Vasavada Vyas Munidas <muni> wrote: Thank you dear Professor. Guest guest
Dear Vyas, It's a hoax. http://www.physorg.com/news74876550.html http://www.abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1709499.htm It all dates back to 2003, when Mars retrograded for a while through Aquarius. The exact date was August 27, 2003, when Mars and Sun were in exact opposition/mutual aspect.
