It is debilitated, badly placed in the 8th house, and is giving L6 Mercury an exact affliction. The lord of the 6th house rules one's health and financial solvency. So, sub-periods of either Rahu, Ketu, or Mercury can trigger difficulties for the significations of Mercury. Whenever a planet is badly placed, even if that planet is Rahu or Ketu, the sub-period can be difficult. Even more so in this case since it is debilitated and causing an affliction. The next sub-period of Jupiter may not help much at all. Its strength is close to zero. The aspect of Mars helps to a slight extent. Their mutual exaltation is good, but when neither planet retains more than 8% strength it is difficult to say how much that will help. His achievements in creative fields come from the strong L5, that too being the Sun, in the 2nd house and exactly conjunct the MEP. The aspect of Moon, also being the 4th lord, on the MEP of the Ascendant gives one a creative personality. The weakness of professional determinant Mars is offset by the strength of the Sun to a good extent. The influences on the 2nd house by the said Sun and also Saturn are very good. Mars' aspect on Jupiter is good as it is the lord of the ascendant, a functional benefic. Its amount of help is very little still due to its own weakness. Gates' Saturn is not having 1% strength like your friends' Jupiter. The latter may very well not show any results. The Jupiter sub-period can be better than the Rahu one. How much better is tough to say exactly. If one were trying to have a child, the sub-periods of Moon and Venus are not conducive to success all likelihood. The extreme weakness of Jupiter is the likely cause of him not being blessed with a son. The point is if one were to try to have a child during the sub-period of Sun it could turn out to be a male child. There may still be some obstructions for him during the sub-period of Jupiter. Results will likely take a lot of time to happen and there could be frustrations. Based on the natal chart itself, yes the sub-period of Jupiter can be better than that of Rahu. As you said, things look difficult for him in Mercury-Mercury and Mercury-Ketu. However, from December 2012 onwards the outlook is significantly better. Your advice to strengthen Jupiter is very good and he should do as such. Mars' strengthening is also desirable. With strengthening, he can enter movie distribution. He should strengthen Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, and the Moon as those are his weak planets. Propitiations of Rahu, Ketu, and Mercury will be of help.
