IN GENERAL, IS A PLANET MALEFIC OR BENEFIC?

The following table provides a GENERALIZED listing of each planet being a malefic or a benefic in a given house in a horoscope. Please pay particular attention to the word "generalized." It must be emphasized here that these are guidelines only. Various factors modify these rules. The sign (Rashi) present in the house does not carry any weight according to Lal Kitab astrology (a unique feature of the Lal Kitab system.)

IN THE FOLLOWING HOUSES

GENERALLY BENEFIC GENERALLY MALEFIC

==============================================================

JUPITER 1 thru' 5, 8, 9, 12 6, 7, 10, 11

SUN 1 thru' 5, 8, 9, 11, 12 6, 7, 10

MOON 1 thru' 5, 7, 9 6, 8, 10, 12

VENUS 2 thru' 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 1, 6, 9

MARS 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 thru' 12 4, 8

MERCURY 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 3, 8 thru' 12

SATURN 2, 3, 7 thru' 12 1, 4 thru' 6

RAHU 3, 4, 6 1, 2, 5, 7 thru' 12

KETU 1, 2, 7, 9 thru' 12 3 thru' 6, 8

======================================================================

Mercury in the eleventh house is considered a malefic and a remedial measure has been suggested in the form of putting a copper coin with a hole in it, around one's neck. But past the age of 34 (thirty-four) this remedial measure should NOT be performed. It is stated in an obscure footnote in LalKitab. Additionally, Mercury in the ninth may not always be bad; see details in the description of Mercury.

While analyzing a birth chart, I always use the above table to ascertain the APPROXIMATE nature of each planet (Is it "potentially" good or bad?) Then I try to confirm whether it meets the test of goodness or badness. Please see the write up on Alpesh's horoscope that I wrote about, earlier. For each planet, I try to figure out its nature by asking pertinent questions. I look at the various aspects of other planets and then determine if a planet is really a malefic, in need of a measure.

Here is an incident from my college days. A then college lecturer (my professor), had become a good personal friend, had his Mars in the fourth. Two well-known local astrologers had prohibited his marriage to his non-mangaleek lady-friend. Another elderly gentleman who was a "LalKitabist" was too scared to suggest a possible marriage because of Mars in the fourth. Just by looking at Mars in the fourth, he rattled off all the evils it would unleash and he also quoted regular jyotish to support his thesis. I had just started following LalKitab during those days. I saw that his Moon was in the eighth and his Saturn and Rahu were together in the third house. Now, Mars in the fourth can be quite destructive. Both, Moon in the eighth and two "paapi" grahas being together, take away the ill effects of Mars in the fourth, according to Lal Kitab. Also, this person's grandfather was an ordinary schoolteacher. (See the account of Mars in the fourth.) Moreover, LalKitab doesn't to the concept of "Mangleek," Well, my verdict was that he should go ahead and get married. But then who was I in comparison to all those well respected astrologers (including a LalKitabist)? I was convinced in my mind that my analysis was valid but I lacked experience and confidence. My friend agreed with me but citing my lack of experience, he wasn't so sure. Seeing no alternative, I suggested to my friend to go to Pharwala to consult Pt Roop Chand ji. Unfortunately, I couldn't accompany him. Panditji took a quick look at his horoscope and told him what type of stairs they had in the house and how those were located. Also, he accurately pinpointed the position of a hand pump in his house and then said some startling things about his uncle (father's elder brother who, incidentally, is represented by Mars) some of which even my friend didn't know (but upon coming home, found those to be amazingly true.) Finally, Panditji told him "get married and yours will be a pair of Laxmi and Ganesh; don't become complacent, both of you are going to be administrators with huge authority, your word will be law; both of you should go for the administrative services exam after getting married."

Well, he and his wife have just retired as senior IAS officers and have done exceedingly well. Whenever I meet him, he tells me that I won; I beat out the much experienced astrologers when I was not even twenty. And of course, for Panditji, he is full of praise. He tells me that without Panditji’s assurances, he probably wouldn't have married the lady he has married and probably still be inhaling chalk dust in a college. I hope you get the point I am trying to make here. A novice like me, beat out the much experienced astrologers - thanks to LalKitab system and, I did my homework; I thoroughly analyzed the horoscope.

When analyzing a horoscope for a varshphal (annual readings), I use the above table but I still try to verify the current happenings. For example, I try to see how Moon (money, education) and Ketu (promotions, transfers, birth of a son) are and what is their potential. I pay particular attention to the third and the fifth houses (and their Lords) to see if there is a forewarning about ill health during the year. If I see the possibility of a problem, I suggest an upaya based on the position of planet/planets in the progressed horoscope. I think that Varshphal analysis is much hard. When I get very confused, then I pick up the phone and talk to Pt Som Dutt ji who has been very kind to me with his time. Mostly, it is perhaps the experience that comes in handy. I also believe that it is perhaps the destiny of the astrologer and the person whose horoscope is being analyzed - he gets helped and the astrologer gets the credit.

There are times when I can't figure out what is going on despite my best efforts. I guess I am not destined to understand those situations.

Best regards and sorry for the long-winded mail.

Respectfully,

Rajinder Bhatia

Dear Bhatia Ji:

I have a question regarding this table, you had shared some time ago.

Do we use this table for Annual horoscope also or just the natal

Chart?

Thanks.
