New, Full Moon and Eclipse Calculations

Dear PVR ji,

 

I am wondering about a calculation issue for a long time. I will put

it down with an example

1)Todays Amavasya Ending Time is

August 1, 2008 15:43:04 (Indian Standard Time).

 

2)In most places in India, the Solar Eclipse begins after 16:00 PM

 

We all know that a Solar Eclipse takes place no New Moon Day and

Lunar Eclipse on Full Moon Day. Also, during an eclipse, the centres

of Sun, Moon and Earth are in straight line (some margin allowed

which leads to partial eclipse).

 

By the definition of Amavasya, it begins when Moon is 12 degrees

behind Sun and ends when angular distance between them is zero. The

Pratipada of Bright Half then begins and ends when Moon is 12

degrees ahead of Sun and so on.

 

So why is it that todays Solar Eclipse takes place after Amavasya is

over ? I know that some approximations are made during Tithi

calculations. I would like to know at what stage and how these

approximations are made which leads to the discrepancy. Can we not

find a method to avoid it ?

It is not about an approximation. Eclipse can happen on either side of Fullest Moon (border of Pournima and Pratipada) and zero Moon (border of Amavasya and Pratipada). There is no guarantee that it happens on Pournima and Amavasya only.

 

It depends on the longitudes and latitudes of nodes.
