JAGANNATH HORA 7.1

Namaste, (1) I am a busy professional working in high tech and spending a lot of time on Jyotish research and teaching. I have limited time for Jyotish software and I pick features that I can implement. If I have more time, a lot more things can be done. Making all screens use the Indian languages is a lot more work and I have no time for it. Because traditional people are used to seeing Indian language letters in charts, I made an arrangement for Indian language characters in charts atleast. (2) Because a lot of Vedic astrologers use those names. If somebody calls Brihaspati as Jupiter and helps us understand the true meanings of the teachings of Parasara, then in my opinion Vedic knowledge is well-served. Words and names are only symbols. The knowledge and wisdom represented by them is the real thing. Why bother so much with symbols

rather than the essence? If you want to use Sanskrita names for rasis and planets, that option exists in JHora. But I do not want to force Sanskrita names down the throat on people who are more familiar with English names. (3) If Parasara is born today, I don't really know if he would have stuck to Sanskrita or brought the Jyotish knowledge to the world in English and other modern languages. Jnaneshwar Maharaj translated BhagavadGita from Sanskrita to Marathi. Ramana Maharshi taught the essence of upanishads in Tamil and Telugu. Tulasidas translated Ramayana to Hindi. Swami Sivananda, Swami Vivekananda etc taught Vedanta and Vedic wisdom in English. Some of these may have been the re-incarnations of rishis. They "resorted" to modern languages to bring the perennial wisdom of sanatana dharma to masses. In the same spirit, I use English language to spread Jyotisha, other Vedic wisdom and rituals like homam. I see nothing wrong in it and this is hardly adulteration of sanatana dharma. I was neither worried nor disappointed. I always get so many emails

praising me, sometimes criticizing me and mostly asking for

readings. I am unable to reply most of the times and reply to very

few mails.

 

Despite his disagreement with me, this gentleman is atleast

interested in the teachings of rishis and keeping their sanctity.

That made me respect him and that is why I even replied!

 

I forwarded it to the list to show how some spiritually inclined

people may be rigid in some matters and have animosity towards us,

despite our good intentions. I was not trying to complain, but just

to share his perspective with you. It is educational to be exposed

to different kinds of people.

 

We should not see people like him as our adversaries. They are

actually strange bedfellows in our pursuit and spreading of Vedic

knowledge. We need not have the same animosity towards them. We

cannot change their rigidity in one day. We can humbly disagree with

them, continue our work with conviction and allow them to work with

us if they still want to. After all, they and we share the same goal

at the end!

Dear Narasimha Rao garu,

 

I have read the mails on the subject. I am

grateful for all those involved,largely you, in making Jhora

available to those interested in astrology.

 

I was pleasantly surprised to see Telugu

letters in the charts.with a choice for selecting languages.I am very

comfortable with English even though I am a Telugu 'speaking' person.

 

If language is a barrier,we all should be

learning Pali or Sanskrit and exchanging mails.Then

belonging to Americans would not be available.

 

I do not become pious by speaking in Telugu

or Hindi,it is the heart that shud be in the proper place.Dharma and

language are not related.

 

 

View everyone with benevolence,as you do ,
