Guest guest
Namaste friends, Thank you for all your enthusiasm. I will divide the help & manual work and assign it to individuals tomorrow. I do not want to overly burden a single individual and want to divide the work equally. Let us divide and conquer! Though I got a lot of volunteers, I still don't have a sense of who all have prior experience in creating .hlp files for help. I want to give this work to only those who have prior experience and give the manual work to others. Please reply ASAP. I will give clear assignments by Vijaya Dasami (Oct 26th). [bTW, I am using MFC for the software. So you can just write .rtf files with help tags and that will be converted to ..hlp when I build the project.] Regarding atlas: Of course, it will not be a drop-down box. Not only is it impractical, but I am sure MFC's drop-down code will crash if you have hundreds of thousands of entries! Obviously, it will be a different interface. There will be an edit box in which you will type the name of the city and the software will fill in the longitude, latitude and timezone. If it finds multiple cities with that name, a pop-up window will come up and you will have to select one. ACS atlas provides an ActiveX control that you can integrate in your software. Based on the info they gave, it's very easy. If we don't use ACS and use Nimmi's database, we will not be able to get the timezone reliably. I agree with Narayan that we should use ACS. I hate their royalty structure (10%), but that's the only good solution. Let us not compromise. I will try to see if we can play games like dividing JHora into 2 parts, with one part using ACS and the other optional add-on part not using it. If we bill customers for the two parts separately, we may have to pay 10% royalty only on one part. I can decide it only after I see the ACS license agreement. When it comes to collecting donations and advance payments and getting Swiss ephemeris and ACS licenses ($1,000 overall), I prefer SJVC-USA to do it. I do not want to handle money. Unfortunately, I haven't heard from any SJVC-USA officebearer. I don't even know if they can sell this software as they are supposed to be a non-profit organization. Some clarity and initiative from SJVC-USA is urgently needed. I request Sanjay and others to clarify who will sell this. They also have to collect money from volunteers and obtain licenses from Swiss Ephemeris and ACS. ACS is urgently needed. Actually, I can pay for ACS liense initial feee from my pocket for now (and get re-imbursed later). But I need somebody from SJVC to take part in this (sign the license). This is our targeted schedule (assuming prompt action from SJVC-USA): (1) I will prepare help for JHLite 4.0 and circulate it to SJVC members on October 26. This will serve as a guideline for JH help. (2) I will also assign help/manual responsibilities to volunteers by October 26 and send the full version to them, so that they can use it and understand it well enough to write the help/manual accurately. (3) I will assign two persons as the leads for these activities. Everyone working on help/manual will finish their work by November 10 and give the pieces to the leads. The leads will put all the pieces together by November 15 and get them to me. (4) With Swiss Ephemeris, signing papers is only a formality, as I already have everything I need. ACS gives the database and ActiveX controls only after the papers are signed. If SJVC-USA finishes this paperwork and gets ACS software to me, I will integrate it in JH by November 5 and send the updated version to help-volunteers. (5) I will continue to put in missing things in JH until November 20. (6) SJVC-USA will make pre-arrangements for marketing, selling (making CDs, printing manuals and shipping them) and make arrangements for support (a phone number if possible, a website, an email address/) by November 20. (6) On November 15, I will get the complete help and manual from the leads. I will go through them and edit them by November 20. (7) We will have a code and documentation freeze on November 20. I will send the .doc file (manual) and CD image to SJVC-USA on November 20. (8) FCS (first customer shipping) will be on November 30 (Kartika Pournami). (9) If Swiss Ephemeris license paperwork is finished by then, I will release JHLite 4.0 on October 31 (Aswayuja Pournami). This will build expectations about JH and serve as publicity. People will get used to the different user interface of JH and also know exactly what to expect in it. The most urgent things to do now are: (1) Clarify - Is the assumption that SJVC-USA can sell JH correct? If not, we need to urgently make some arrangements. (2) Tell all the volunteers on " varahamihira " list to send money to whatever the correct SJVC-USA address is. (3) Sign papers with ACS and get me the atlas software. I can contact ACS, but I need to give them the name and address of the licensee for preparing the license document. They will then prepare the docs, send them and send software upon receipt of the signed docs and money (I can supply money for now). So tell me the name and address of SJVC-USA officebearer who will handle this. I will pass it on to ACS. (4) Assignment of responsibility and sample help for JHLite 4.0 - Narasimha's responsibility. To be done by October 26. Once again, thanks to all of you. I sincerely hope that we can release this software smoothly on Kartika Pornami and get some money for SJVC and also help astrologers. God bless you all. May Jupiter's light shine on us, Narasimha PS: Send a blank mail to jhora- to to jhora list. All the JH related discussion will be on this list instead of varahamihira. Guest guest
Dear Frank, Don't worry about your lack of experience in creating ..hlp files. I don't mean to put anyone down. I only want to give the right work to everyone and also not load someone with too much work. I see that you and Sarajit have your creative juices flowing. I liked the pictures you sent in the document. You can certainly help with the printed manual. As I said, I will assign specific tasks soon and send you the full version. Yes, I hope Dina-natha or Kusha Devi clarify things from SJVC perspective. Also, the decision on how exactly to distribute JHora will be left to SJVC and I will not interfere. Shiv ji, you may be confused by the thread that Frank suddenly cc'ed you on. I'll give you some background. I am developing " Jagannatha Hora " software for commercial sale by SJVC. These guys are helping me with the preparation of online help and printed manual. We were discussing how to sell/ship it. Somebody suggested that you might be a good person to distribute it. Frank forwarded the mail to you to see if you have interest. I don't know exactly what SJVC wants to do and leave it to SJVC. Guest guest
Hare Rama Krishna Dear Narasimha! Nice to look at the plans and deadlines. I am sure with lord Jagannatha's Grace everything will fall in to place at the correct time. As of writing of the help files, I admit that I also have half-baked knowledge. Though I didn't work in a software project writing help files, I learnt it myself and found it quite easy with the help compilers available on the net. The format which you specified, i.e., ".hlp" is the older one and the newer format ".chm" looks better and more user friendly. I searched on the internet as found that the help compiler in .chm format is freely available. The compiler is htmlhelp.exe and available at http://www.easyhtmlhelp.com and some other sites.Though I didn't work with this format, I am sure this wouldn't be that difficult as it looks similar to html. The effort might include two things... Creating the help documents in .rtf (rich text format), which can be easily created in MS Word. The second part involve compiling, creating links, etc. etc. I am sure it is not that complex and can be handled with ease. In the user Manual we have to make it very descriptive with lots of screen captures etc. Here also some persons might involve in writing the text and others can help in designing (formating and proof-reading). I am getting my computer delivered at my home on 18th of this month and thereafter I can fully devote my time (at least evening), for this work. Working from the office is of great difficulty. Some skills which I have 1. Formating with MS Word 2. Adobe Photoshop 3. Macromedia Flash (Can be used in later upgrade versions) 4. Web Authoring (with MS Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks) - Working with HTML 5. C++ (preliminary) 6. Windows Help files (.hlp files) - Worked on my own. I don't have a background of software professional, I learnt all these on my own. I shall be very happy if, I could be of any help in this regard. My core competency area on RDBMS design, SAP, or knowledge of MBA will not be of much use now, Sad . However, I can handle Advertising and marketing of this product. I hope you saw the outline of help Files and also the User Manual. What I was worried about is the volume of writing we need to do to cover each of these topic along with graphical illustration (screen captures, diagrams etc). Wish you all the best Sarajit - "Rao, Narasimha" <pvr <jhora > Cc: <srath; <vmihira Monday, October 15, 2001 10:09 PM JHora plans > Namaste friends,> > Thank you for all your enthusiasm.
