September 25, 2009FORT SMITH, Arkansas -- A pregnant woman in Arkansas finds out she is pregnant again, and the babies are not twins.

 

An ultrasound revealed a second, smaller, male fetus, growing next to and Julia Grovenburg's baby girl. They say the second fetus was

conceived about two and a half weeks after the first.

 

Doctors say the Grovenburg babies may be a case of superfetation, which is "conceiving while pregnant."

 

The couple's doctor talked about the medical shocker to a national

morning show, "When the woman had her ultrasound initially, they saw

one sack, one baby developing, and that baby had a certain gestational

age; then they noticed a second heartbeat in a child that was much,

much younger developmentally," said Dr. Karen Boyle of the Greater

Baltimore Medical Center.

 

The doctor says conceiving while pregnant is extremely rare, "It does

really sound like this is a true case of different conception times for

these children," Boyle continued, adding that she could only find

"about 10 reported cases" of superfetation.

 

A different doctor weighs in on the situation, "This is an unusual and

rare condition, but the possibility is real. It can only be confirmed

after delivery by chromosomal and metabolic studies on the babies," Dr.

Michael Muylaert wrote in a letter to the show.

 

Dr. Boyle says superfetation is often dangerous for the younger baby,

who could be born prematurely. She says it puts lung development at

risk. However, in the Grovenburgs' case, a difference of two weeks

would not present many risks. "The interesting thing in this case is if

these children were actually born on their due dates, the older child

would be born at the end of 2009, and the younger child would be born
