Dear friends,

Normally in the evenings after dark, I keep the TV on while working. At the moment "Troy" Movie is being shown on HBO. This kindled my meories of nearly half a century ago. I was studying in Don Bosco where they has CBSE and all books were imported from Rome and studies of history were particularly related to Rome etc. I remember the photo of the Wooden Horse in My History book of 5th standard (Probably Year 1966) which was taken as a gift but actually contained soldiers to ill their sworn enemies. Few things come out significantly on watching this, movie. There are two heores here. One is Hector and the other Achilles. When Hector was killed his funeral was done by burning him on the pyre like our Hindus do. Another was Hectors father requesting Achilles to hand him the body of his son, so that he could place two coins on his sons eyes which could take him through the river of ....... (Just like our Hindus have the Vaitarni and are asked to always donate hair to the dead ancestors, and also give food to cows so that when their time comes after they are dead, they can be taken through the river Vaitarni without any hitch). Another significant thing was that Achilles could only be killed through his heels as the other parts of his body were very strong to be hurt, just like we had Duryodhana who could be only killed by Bhimas Gada on his thighs (Since he did not come fully naked to meet his mother when she asked him to, for blessing him for victory in the war), or Like Lord Krishna who was killed by the hunters arrow through his toes.

What do all these similiarties mean ? God knows. But they set one thinking.

Dear Bhaskar ji,

I too was watching the movie yesterday but switched off the tv once the war started as I am an early bird. The gesture of keeping two pennies on the eye lids of the deceased is something I have noticed in yet another movie "From Hell" or something of the sort , starring Johnny Depp ( Looking his usual enigmatic, gorgeous self ) playing an Inspector of POlice tracking a serial killer. He places two pennies on the eye lids of 2 of the victims and when his assistant asks him he gives the same reply. They are for paying the oarsman to row them across the river of death. This story is based in UK.

May be this is all about the vasudaiva kutumbakam concept.regards,
