Ashwini - The story and info This first point to know is that - the Aswini constellation, Aswini Kumaras, Aswini Nakshatra, and Aswini Yoga tara (brightest star in aswini constellation) are all different concepts. * Aswini constellation: This is the name ascribed to a group of stars present in Aries sign. * Aswini Kumaras: This is a name given to the stars Caster and Pullux which are part of Punarvasu Nakshatra. * Aswini Nakshatra : This is a name ascribed to the area 0 deg to 13 deg 20 min of Aries Sign. * Aswini Yogatara : This is the name ascribed to the brightest star in the 9 deg 27 min area in Aswini Nakshatra area. It seems that in the vedic past only 2 stars where considered as indicative of Aswini constellation. This is evident from the vedic prayers such as "Aswigbhyam swaha, Aswa yugbhyam swaha" [i offer this to the sacrificial fire for the two Aswinis, I offer this to the sacrificial fire for the two horses (two stars present in aswini constallation)] and also from the Amarakosa (an ancient Sanskrit dictionary) words "Aswa yugaswini" [two horses - the word used as a synonym for aswini nakshatra]. Aswini is also famous as the first star among the nine nautical stars that helps sea faring people to navigate. These nine stars are - 1) Aswini 2) Rohini 3) Punarvasu 4) Makha 5) Chitra 6) Jyeshta 7) Sravana 8) Formal haut 9) Markab. Moon hides these 9 big stars in its journey towards east. The sailors calculate their longitude and latitude (their relative position in the globe) from the distance between these stars and Moon in the night. That is why they are called nautical stars. There are different opinions about the shape or symbol this constellation has. Horse head, the head of a ram/goat, a curved sward are all some of the shapes/symbols ascribed to this Nakshtra by various people. Aswini deva are considered as the ruling deities of Aswini Nakshatra. In Rig veda and other texts numerous quotes are available about their excellence in treatment; they are considered as the physicians of Davas (the gods). The word Aswini is not only ascribed to Aswini nakshatra but also to the two stars Castor and Pollux of the Punarvasu nakshatra. But as per ancient indian traditional belief system Aditi is the ruling deity of Punarvasu nakshatra; where as Aswini deva is the ruling deity of Aswini nakshatra. It is just that the two stars in Punarvasu constallation has the name Aswini devas as well. Nakshatra ---------------- Devata -------------- Indian Name Aswini ----------------Aswini Deva -------------- Aswini Nakstara Punarvasu ----------------Aditi -------------- Aswini Deavas (Caster and Pollux) Understand this difference and terminology clearly which referring to Aswini Nakshtra. [i have seen Bhagavati ji referring to Aswini nakshtra and then stating that the stars in Aswini nakshtra are Caster and Pollux - this is wrong] Aswini Nakstra (Moon in Aswini Nakshatra) in the month of Vrischika (Scorpio) called Mritu Nakshatra (Death Nakshtra) as per the text Madhaveeya. Mrityu Nakshatra are not good for any good deeds. Madhaveeya states that if good deeds are done in Mrityu Nakshatra (This is a single day in an year), then death will follow! [i don't agree this approach of predicting death even to good deeds done on a bad day] Aswini nakshatra is considered as "Ardha Sasya" (Half yield only in agriculture) - meaning that if I tried to cultivate something and if the beginning Nakshtra/Muhurta selected was Aswini, then I will get only half the yield, and not full; for anything I do I will get only half benefit and not full! Tuesday and Aswini Nakshatra together is considered bad for house warming; this combination is never considered for Muhurta for this purpose. I am just sharing some of my knowledge and info about Aswini Nakshtra with you all. I invite all of you to share any such info available with you so that our understanding about this nakshatra could improve. Hope you enjoyed. :)Love and regards,Sreenadh

Dear All, Wikipedia has the following say about this Nakshtra. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashvini )Love and regards,Sreenadh=======================Ashvini

Ashvini is the first nakshatra in Hindu astronomy, corresponding to β and

γ

Arietis .[1]

In Jyotiá¹£a, Ashvini is ruled by Ketu, the descending lunar node. In electional astrological, Ashvini is classified

as a Small constellation, meaning that it is believed to be advantageous to

begin works of a precise or delicate nature while the moon is in Ashvini.[2]

Symbolism

Unsurprisingly, Ashvini is ruled by the Ashwini

Kumaras, the horse-headed twins who served as physicians to the Gods.

Personified, Ashvini is considered to be the wife of the Ashwini Kumaras.[3] Ashvini is represented either by the head of a horse, or by honey and the bee hive.[4]

Characteristics

Jyotiá¹£a states that the constellation through

which the moon is passing during the time of a person's birth has an effect on

the personality traits later in life.[5]

A person born when the moon is in Ashvini moves quickly and easily. They are

brilliant, bright and intelligent. They also tend to possess physical beauty.

Naming Practices

Under the ancient traditional Hindu principle of naming individuals

according to their birthstar (see Jyotisha), the

following Sanskrit syllables correspond with this Nakshatra, and would belong

at the beginning of a first name:

Chu

(pronounced as it appears)Che (pronounced chay)Cho (pronounced as it

appears)La (pronounced as it appears)
