Guest guest
Dear Sreenadh-ji, Good to know about that. However, there is a map called 'Peres Map' or something similar. It is a 14th/15th Century map, which was supposedly created by combining information from different part maps available with different sea faring navigators. The map was found in Turkey.. and supposedly shows very high level of accuracy .. and even shows shorelines of Antarctica .. which is below permafrost for last 12-14000 yrs. But again.. there is controversy. And it had used some sort of lang/lat data. We probably have forgotten more than we have 'discovered'. regards chakraborty Sreenadh [sreesog] Friday, October 03, 2008 10:56 AM History of the concept of Longitude and Latitude Dear All, I was just searching about the history of - the concept 'Longitude and Latitude'. I was wonder struck on knowing that this concpet is totally NEW to the western world and that prior to 15th century Amerigo Vespucci and 17th century Galileo and Halley they didn't had much awareness about this concept - and also that even by this period their understanding of the Longitude-Latitude co-ordinate system was very limited!!! Looking back to Indian astronomical history we find that, even in Ancient Surya Siddhanta (which dates back to " prior to BC 5th century " ) Longitude is termed " Lambamsa " and Latitude is termed " Akshamsa " . We see that similar to the words Akshamsa-Lambamsa; the words " Charardha-Desandara " was also of popular use in astronomical literature- whether the author be Aryabhata or Varaha Mihira of 6th century BC. Desandara menas the distance (difference) between two specific longitudes; the distance between two places. Ancient Siddhantas (astronomical texts), and Puranas (ancient texts with collects and presents ancient knowledge in the form of story telling) mention/use these words to refer to locations. It becomes well evident that the concept of Longitude-Latitude originated in India! It seems that we should improve our understanding about the history of origin of this concept - as far as the history of astronomical and geographical concepts are concerned India deserves more credit that it is ascribed with! Guest guest
Dear Sreenadh-ji, Sorry, I was mistaken. The maps are known as Piri Reis map. A link out of many links is ..... http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_1.htm <http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_1.htm> regards chakraborty Sreenadh [sreesog] Friday, October 03, 2008 10:56 AM History of the concept of Longitude and Latitude Dear All, I was just searching about the history of - the concept 'Longitude and Latitude'. Guest guest
Dear Chakraborty ji, As evident from the Piri Reis map itself, it seems that the co-ordinate system used in this map is NOT Lang-Lat, but could be some other system. ( Piri Reis map: http://www.world-mysteries.com/sar_1.htm) Possibly that could be a research subject in itself. There are many similar ancient maps with almost accurate info regarding Antarctica is available, which point to the fact that prior to 15,000-20,000 years or so this region must have been inhibited by people, and the climate in Antarctica might have been different during that period and also that we MAY find a lost civilization in Antarctica. Many have even written exhaustive books on this possibility and subject. But that is another subject. The point is the use of Long-Lat as we know and use it today are not evident even in these maps, and also note that these maps are of 15th,16th, 17th century even though the earlier maps they depended upon might be much much much older.
