Naaraayana = Naaram+ Ayanam. Naaram = Water, Ayana = movement.

Naaraayana means = Water Snake, the Constellation of Draco.

Pole of the ecliptic is situated on Draconis near the Zeta (if I remember correctly) star around which the Earth's axis or Dhruva cuts the precessional cone. The point around which Dhruva does parikramana got personified as Naaraayana or Vishnu, the supreme person of all solar myths.

I think the explanation below is incorrect. Nara + ayana - how it will be pronounced with dirgha-maatra as Naaraayana?
