Simple Method to Calculate the Day

of Any Date

Day = (Y + ¼ x Y + M + D)/7

Note: While dividing Year with 4

always discard the remainder and take only the result. While dividing with 7

consider only the remainder. The remainder starting from Sunday =0 will give

the Day.

If it is a leap year then for the

months Jan & Feb subtract 1 from Sum and divide by 7.

Acronym: 0-336-146-25-0-35

E.g. 1) 23-11-1928

Y = 28; M = 3; D= 23

Day = (28 + 7 + 3 + 23)/7 = 61/7;

Remainder = 5; Friday

E.g. 1) 01-01-1972 (leap year)

Y = 72; M = 0; D= 28

Day = [(72 + 18 + 0 + 1) – 1] /7 =

90/7; Remainder = 6; Saturday

The above method will give correct

result for all the days of the 20th century (i.e. from 1900 to 1999)

Love and regards,

Sreenadh

Dear Chandra ji,If the requirement is of just knowing the day for a particular date, why don't you try sites like...

http://calendarhome.com/converter/http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html?year=1459 & country=35

there may be many more sites like this... and you get it in a jiffy. All the best.neelam

Dear Chandra ji, The method is very simple. This rule is given by the great German mathematician, Carl Friedrich Gauss, for deducing the weekdays corresponding to any date of the AD, BC, old style or new style. The formula is - W = D + M + Y + L - C. (Modulo 7)

Let me explain what each letter stands for and mean. * W stands for the weekdays starting from Friday as 1

* D for the date

* M for the constant specified digit for each month. The digits (one each) for every month starting from January to December are 033614625035; try remembering this number by splitting it into 2 six digit parts for easy remembering, such as, 033614-625035 [A samll note on old style and new style dates (even though not important to us here: Old style - dates on or prior to 2nd Sep 1752; It must be remembered that, due to calendar adjustment, the next day to 2nd Sep was 14th, not the 3rd in the year 1752)]

* Y stands for the last 2 digits of the year.

* L is the quotient obtained when Y is divided by 4 (rejecting the remainder). If it is a leap year 1 should be deducted from the answer. * C is the first 2 digits of the year.

* Modulo 7 means, the result should be divided by 7 ignoring the quotient and considering only the remainder. We are free to - Add all these numbers and then cast away the Sevens. OR Cast away the 7s at any stage and then add the remains. [This is simply natural since, (a+b)/7 = a/7 + b/7] The following example clarifies this rule through an example - Today is 15th Feb 2008, Friday. Let us apply our method for this date and let us see the result.

Example 1----------

Qn: What is the weekday for 15th Feb 2008 ?Ans:

W = D + M + Y + L - C . (Modulo 7)

D = 15; on casting away the 7s we get 1

M = 3 (Taken from the number 033614-625035) Y = 08; on casting away the 7s we get 1

L = 08; On dividing by 4 we get 2 as the quotient and zero as the quotient; This means that it is a leap year and we need to deduct 1.

C = 20; on casting away 7s we get 6

Thus W = 1 + 3 + 1 + 2 - 6 = 1

Deduct 1 for leap year, thus W = 1 - 1 = 0

Counting from Friday it is Friday! Thus we get the answer 15th Feb 2008 is Friday.Example 2

-----------Qn: What is the weekday for 23rd March 1371? Ans:

W = D + M + Y + L - C . (Modulo 7)

D = 23; on casting away the 7s we get 2

M = 3 (Taken from the number 033614-625035) Y = 71; on casting away the 7s we get 1

L = 71; On dividing by 4 we get 17 as the quotient and some remainder; This means that it is a leap year and we need not deduct 1. on casting away 7s from the quotient 17 we get 3.

C = 13; on casting away 7s we get 6

Thus W = 2 + 3 + 1 + 3 - 6 = 3

Counting from Friday it is Sunday. Thus we get the answer 23rd Mar 1371 was Sunday.Note:

-----

For dates in BC, the year is to be reduced by one and the result given a negative sign. Then add a convenient multiple of 7 (in tens or hundreds preferably) to make the result positive. Eg: 15th Jun 763 BC = 15th Jun - 762 Astronomical

By adding a convenient multiple of 7, say 980 with the year we get the year as -762 + 980 = 218;

So do the calculations for 15th Jun 218 AD (Just to find the weekday) . i.e. The weekday would be the same for both 15th Jun 763 BC as well as 15th Jun 218 AD.

[For the clarifications given in this message I am indubted to the article 'Finding the weekday' written by VS Kalyanaraman (the former sub editor of Astrological Magazine and my friend) present in his published book "Indian Astrology - An appraisal" published by CBH publications]
