Guest guest
Dear All, I was much familiar with good ancient astrologers in kerala. But when I started collecting astrological texts that originated in the north, apart from original texts (which makes us confuse whether to depend on it or not), I was curious about good commentaries as well. Looking for good scholarly astrologers with practical knowledge who wrote good commentaries I located one or two. They are - * Acharya Balabhadra (who wrote Hora Ratna) * Acharya Mukunda Daivanja Parvateeya (who wrote Gataka Bhushana etc) * Rama Daivajna (who wrote Muhurta Chintamani etc) * The author of Brihat Daivajna Ranjana Apart from these three I couldn't find many satisfying the conditions - 1) Good astrologer with practical knowledge 2) Good scholarly knowledge in Astrology and Sanskrit language These kinds of effort are done by us (simple practical astrologers), so that we can find some scholars on whose books and words we can depend. I am sharing what I found, and hope that it would be useful to some. Love, Sreenadh
Guest guest
Dear Goal ji, Thanks for the note. But I already know of through this numerous commentaries and books - which amply clarifies that he lacks any 'practical knowledge of astrology'. He is simply a Sanskrit scholar cum translator and NOT FOR SURE an astrologer with practical knowledge to depend upon. With his numerous translations and some own books he has done a good service to spreading the knowledge related to astrology and familiarizing many books in regional language to the general public who like to read Hindi. His son has translated some of his books to English as well. But the utter lack of systematic approach, and lack of knowledge of practical astrology is baffling. He seems to have some special interest in unique methods of Jaimini and Parasara, but there is rarely anything genuine (which reflects his insights or understanding about the practical application of astrological principles) in his books. He is good as a translator, but SHOULDN'T be as a guide or guru to anyone who sincerely approaches astrology to learn, master and apply the principles as per the guidance of commentator, clearly because of his lack of understanding about the practical. Anyway I have good respect for him due to the service he did for the cause of astrology - by translating many books and writing some. Note: I have many of his translations or commentaries with me. Most of them mere to useless, except for the fact that the texts provide us with the original quotes, with an approximate meaning of the quotes below. There seems to be only a few good translations came out of him – such as the one for Jaimini Sutra, the one for Jataka Bhooshana etc (but there too he seems to have copied much from the earlier commentators, than providing something genuine and original). Any way leave this subject here it self – it could all seem to be personal preferences as well to some.
