Guest guest
Dear Arjun ji, Siddhas are normally Saiva sages. Later even Jain sages who practiced the ancient Yogic/Tantric/Medicine of these ancient Saiva sages also came to be known by the same name. The Saiva Siddhas contributed to many great knowledge branches - to umpteen perfection. To name some - * Siddha Medicine: This could be termed the ancient form of Allopathy. Siddha medicine uses metal powers as and some powders systematically prepared out of poisons as a medicine. Gold Power, Mercury powder and many more prepared following the traditional advice are used as medicine in Siddha Medicine. Siddha Medicine (or Siddha Ayurveda) is a very very effective treatment method, which gives instantaneous results. As in all Siddha knowledge branches Sage Agastya is considered as the first guru of this system of medicine. * Nadi System of Astrology: The unique systems of Nadi astrology are very popular in Tamilnadu and in many other states in South India. Nadi systems ascribed to - Siva, Sage Agasta, Sage Kakabusunda, Sage Brigu and many more are available. To name some - Maha siva nadi, Siva nadi, Agastya nadi, Kakabusunda nadi, Bhogar nadi and so on. Even though many say that they have nadi texts related to these unique traditions with them, very few if this traditional material is publicly available. Madras Manuscript library has published several volumes of Agastya nadi and Maha siva nadi in Tamil. Note that most of the Siddha nadi works ascribed to Siddhas are in ancient Tamil language. * Siddha Yoga Tradition: The Siddha tradition has its own Yoga tradition with many branches sprouting from the same. The Kriya Yoga tradition, The south Indian Yoga traditions followed in Siddhasrams of Saint Sivanada etc to name a few. * Siddha Tantra: Siddha system has its own Tantric traditions - with many variants; but all treating God Siva as the ultimate deity. Siddha Tantra and Yoga gives importance to Kundalini Yoga. Like in all tantric traditions - Men and Women becomes equally important in this tantric tradition as well. May due to symbolism of comparing Kundalini with a snake, or because the Snake worships (Naga kula) people were also siddhas - Snake worship is also popular among Siddha Tantrics. Concepts such as 'ashta siddhis (8 unique capabilities of a true Yogi)' are part of both Siddha Yoga and Siddha Tantra. * Siddha Fighting and related Treatment(Kalari and Marma vidya): Several Kalari and Marma traditions ascribes their lineage to Siddha tradition and Sage Agastya. Marma Vidya (disabling people or curing diseases by giving special importance to hitting special points in human body) is the ultimate flowering of Kalari Tradition, and Siddha people are the one who perfected it. There are many books and traditions available on Kalari and Marma that ascribe their lineage to Agastya and Siddha sages. * Grammar and Language: The first grammar text written in Tamil is ascribed to Agastya. The language itself is believed to be originated from the sound of drums of God Siva. Siddha people considers Patanjali (One who composed a book on Sanskrit grammar) also as a Siddha. Of course Patanjali too worships Siva as the ultimate god. But it should be told that only very few studies have been done to understand, and translate the Siddha wisdom to modern language such as English. The main period and contributions of Siddha tradition is believed to be prior to 1st Sankha period (1st century AD). May be the origin and knowledge of Siddha tradition goes back to 1000 BCE to 1st century ADE. Since the Siddha people and its followers are very reluctant in imparting all these knowledge to others who are not their true students - most of the knowledge cherished by this great tradition is already lost, or in the verge of destruction. Let us hope that some true scholars will come up who are sincerely interested in these knowledge branches and the Siddha tradition - who will reconstruct these knowledge branches and preserve them for the posterity. Guest guest
Dear Arjun ji, The following info could be useful: Siddha Medicine: --------------------- Useful link: http://www.hinduonnet.com/folio/fo0010/00100200.htm The link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalarippayattu) in wikipedia reads - "Medical treatment in southern styles of Kalarippayatt -which does include massage - is identified with Dravidian Siddha medicine which is as sophisticated as - though distinct from - Ayurveda. The Dravidian Siddha medical system is also known as Siddha Vaidyam is attributed to the rishi Agasthya."
