The Vedic year is sesonal i.e. tropical. It is thus a year from one equinox to another. It is unaffected by precession. Similarly, Vedic motnhs are directly realted to seasons, as is evident from their names like Madhu-Madhava (Vasanta Ritu) etc. This is clear from the Vedic manatras like Madushchai-madhavashchai vasantikav ritu etc. (Pl. see BVB6.doc, 1999b.doc and rashi5.doc etc. in files section) As such, the real Vedic calendar for Vedic Hindus is based on seasonal year and months related to seasons which are unaffected by precession of equinoxes. Astronomically/scientificaly, this will be clear from the fact that Uttarayana (Winter Solstice) was the shortest day of the year in 10,000 BC and will be so in 10,000 AD as well. Similarly, Dakshinayana (Summer Solstice) will be the longest day of the year in 10,000 AD as it was in 10,000 BC. and so on. There was a very lively disucussion on this topic (seasons vis-a-vis precession)with Dr. Anand M. Sharan of this forum, copies of which were forwaded to other forums. As such, instead of aligning our fasts, festivals and muhurtas to a (Vedic) seasonal year and to Vedic (seasonal) months like Madhu, Madhava etc., we are aligning them to Lahiris and Ramans and Kharegats and Muladharawalas etc. etc. and thus killing our own Vedic dharma ourselves under the pretext of saving it! If a clendar advises the Vedic Hindus to celebrate Pitramavasya on the day of actual Dipavali and so on, the earlier we make a bonfire of such calendars the better for the Vedic culture.
