Guest guest
Dear friends, Namaskar! While trying the check the veracity of statements that Aryabhata could have calculated the Annular Solar Eclipse of August 11, 519 AD, from his Aryabhati etc. I had to use “Mahesh” and “Ganesh” programs for determining the longitudes etc. of the moon and the sun etc. for that point of time. I found it difficult to calculate longitudes for exact timings with these programs. Though “Ganesh” could calculate these details up to the nearest minute, however, since I had put an inbuilt Delta Time correction of +74364.02 seconds at the beginning of the imaginary Kali Era i.e. February 17/18, 3102 BCE, the results did not tally with the data given by Shri K. Chandra Hari in the relevant article nor with the data provided in the Saha CRC Report for Aryabhata’s 23rd birthday for March 21, 499 AD. I, therefore, had to revise the original “Mahesh” program again and the result is “ganapati” program. You can calculate mean longitudes of all the planets for any time of the day you desire from 10,000 BC to 12030 AD, apart from the geocentric Apparent longitudes of the Sun, Moon and Mean Rahu etc. besides tithi, nakshatra, yoga etc. E.g., if you want to calculate mean longitudes of all the planets etc., besides finding the tithi, week-day etc. for the midnight of February 17/18, 3102 BC (which means 24 hours of February 17, 3102 BC, Ujjain Mean Time) you can just enter 18,56,56 against ”What is the Ephemeris time” for 17,2,-3102 BC since that is the equivalent Ephemeris/Dynamical Time for that date and time. The results will be zero degrees of longitudes for all the planets, except Mean Rahu, as per the old and current Surya Sidhanta but not as per the Aryabhati or the Sidhanta Shiromani nor as per Ptolemy. Of course they cannot be zero as per modern astronomy either, and you can see for yourself as to how correct or incorrect these longitudes are as compared to modern astronomy, whether the so called Lahiri nirayana or the so called Sayana! It has to be remembered that all the sidhantas, whether the earliest Surya Sidhanta of Maya the mlechha or the latest Sidhanta Shiromani by Bhaskara-II etc. are silent about Delta Time difference. It is not actually their fault either (though Surya Bhagwan of Surya Sidhanta should have been aware of the same!) since even modern astronomers were unaware of such a difference until the early 1940s, but then this time difference amounts to about 74364 seconds i.e. about 20 hours 39 minutes and 24 seconds of time as on February 17/18, 3102 BCE. In other words, the longitudes of the Surya Sidhanta or Aryabhata Sidhanta or Aryabhati etc. are not for Ujjain Mean Time but for an epoch that is plus/minus about 20.66 hours of the same! For a period of 3000 BC to 3000 AD, the exact Delta Time can be obtained from NASA/JPL Interactive Horizon Ephemeris and if you so desire, you can include the same in “Ganapati” program to get the results for UT. For example, for getting the longitudes for the actual Ujjain Mean midnight for February 17/18, 3102 BCE, you can add 74364 against “What is the Delta Time”. You will get the longitudes for exact midnight of Ujjain Mean Time then, which are not zero at all even as per the Surya Sidhanta or Aryabhata-Sidhanta either! It may be mentioned in passing that this Delta Time puts yet another question mark on the accuracy of the results generated by our sidhantas and the astrological predictions based on those results! But then that is the beauty of “Vedic astrology” – to make correct predictions from incorrect data! Anybody can download “Ganapati” free of cost from HinduCalendar Please do let me have your views about “Ganapati” so that if necessary further improvements could be made. With regards, A. K.
