I would deeply appreciate if any one can provide information about Paraasahra's astronomy other than what I had posted. To briefly recollect, I had pointed out that the prose text tradition of Paraashara quoted by Utpala (commentary on Brihat samhita) and Ballala sena (in Adbhuta saagara) was perhaps older than Varahamihira by some 1000 years. I have already searched wellknown manuscript libraries on this issue. It is possible authors other than the above have also quoted Parashara about his astronomical concepts or beliefs. I have seen texts associated with Paraashara like: Krishiparrashara, Brhihat Pa-Hora shastram, Pa-smriti, Vrddhaparashara etc. They do not contain astronomical info conforming to the prose style Parashara tantra/samhita. Hence the search is continued further. Any lead or information is welcome. RN Iyengar --- End forwarded message ---
Guest guest
Dear Kaul ji and Iyengar ji, Me too have the copy of both - Utpala's commentary on Brihat samhita & Adbhuta saagara of Ballala sena - with me. As you rightly mentioned both the texts quote from " Parashara Samhita " (Parashara Tantra ? - That is a new terminology to me!) and most which seems to be written in prose. ==> > the prose text tradition of Paraashara quoted by Utpala (commentary > on Brihat samhita) and Ballala sena (in Adbhuta saagara) was perhaps > older than Varahamihira by some 1000 years. <== Could be... But based on the available literary references, since the available quotes points to the information Parasara who wrote 'Parashara Samhita' lived around BC 1400, essentially the difference between them will amount to 2000 years, since Mihira lived around AD 550. It should also be agreed that the language of he text does not satisfy this condition - instead of Vedic Sanskrit, we find normal Sanskrit of possibly the period after Patanjeli in those texts. So the contraversy may continue. ==> > I have seen texts associated with Paraashara like: > Krishiparrashara, Brhihat Pa-Hora shastram, Pa-smriti, > Vrddhaparashara etc. <== Great! Even though I have a version of BPHS with me; I am yet to see texts such as * Krishiparrashara * Pa-smriti and * Vrddhaparashara. If anybody can help me to get a copy of such rare texts, I would be thankful to you. Utpala tells us that Parashara wrote a book called " Parashara Sidhanta " ; I am yet to see any reference from the same; If even Utpala failed to get a copy of the text even in that ancient past, I can not expect see a copy of it now, I think. That is the text that is supposed to contain Parashara's astronomic knowledge; but the same is lost to us. But I am yet to see even references to the slokas of that text till now. ==> > I have already searched wellknown manuscript libraries on this issue. But in that case the place to search for such knowledge is " well known commentaries of ancient sidhantic texts " , where you may find references from " Parashara Sidhanta " , which point to astronomical knowledge of Parashara. In my search of astrological knowledge, I found that it is the " ancient well known commentaries of well known texts " is which that usually contain knowledge from lost texts. Utpala's commentary on Mihira's work can be quoted as an example. There are several such great works in regional languages, which one could find in regional manuscript libraries, and that is where one should search, if he want to re-construct some ancient knowledge from lost texts. Hope this helps.
